Paula Alder has been singing since the age of six. Her mother played the piano, her father played the violin, and Paula grew up on her parentsâ extensive jazz and classical vinyl collection. She studied voice with Richard Loring and acting with Lee Strasburg in Hollywood and planned a career in musical theater. Her motherâs sudden death in 1971 changed everything.

Alder moved to Santa Cruz to complete her University education, where she studied theater, music, art, and playwriting. She was featured in numerous local and regional musical productions including My Fair Lady, Cabaret, and The Club and theatrical Productions with Bear Republic Theater. A veteran of the L.A. scene in the early 70âs, she has also appeared at the Kuumbwa Jazz Club and, more recently, at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz with such notable artists as Sista Monica Parker.

In 1997, she launched her dream business, Smith Alder Fine Clothing and Art Jewelry, currently located at the beautiful new Santana Row Shopping Center in San Jose. She began monthly in-store vocal jazz gigs with virtuoso guitarist, Mark Van Ness and was part of two all-star line-ups at the Rio Theater. With fans asking for a jazz CD and Mark working with new band, Seven Come Eleven, it was time to produce a jazz vocal CD. The result is stunning: a gorgeous collection of jazz standards, both ballads and up tunes, with innovative arrangements utilizing Hammond organ, guitar, drums, horns, and strings. Alderâs heart and soul are in these tunes, as are her unique lyrical interpretations.
