ROCK: Modern Rock, ROCK: Progressive Rock
Details:
David Pavia's second release "Songs For Soft Machines" has propelled him into the forefront of Modern Rock music. Soft Machines is a dynamic record that has been carefully crafted as a complete work, not unlike many of the great records he has clearly been influenced by, it runs deep. Instead of getting stuck in trendy rock fashions, David references the rawness of Lennon's solo work, even covering him with a lush version of Imagine's "Look At Me". Taking it a step further, David injects this record with some newfound bombast to add to his arsenal of singer/songwriter crooning. Come To Life soars with a sparse but intensely driven guitar and drum filled staccatto. Andy Ross of OK GO fame lends his wealthy guitar soloing talents to this track, as does impressive Keith Moonish sounding Brian Kantor of Higgins - pounding the skins with impressive resolve. Saying that the record is sloppy is taking it too far, but David has clearly tried to keep the tracks from too much refinement. What is left, along with the occasional dicey moment, is a group of songs with their extraordinary spirit well intact. He starts off with a bouncing rock rave up "Here We Go Again", that climaxes with raw emotion, extolling faith in Love- "You can go very far, but it's right where you are. You can go very far but it's right were you're stranded!!!!". The last word screamed with Joplin-esq intensity and duration.
Moving on to the second track, David is careful to soften the blows a bit with the almost poppy sounding "Love is All Over Me". David accompanies himself with what sounds like a full blown choral section, soulfully delivering the spirit driven melody. "Everyone You Know" is a soaring modern ballad in the vein of recent U2 or Coldplay, ending with the repeated message that commands faith in life and the world. Indeed David has a very clear message of hope and fearlessness that runs through the entire record. Particularly arresting is "Killing Them With Kindness", a piano epic with a stark but delightful political message. The rollercoaster record goes through several more up's and down's, ends with perhaps it's best song simply entitled "Confidence". David's lyrics here are too exceptional not to reprint - "Casting the net of lonliness, Catching the wave of agony, Casting the net of emptiness, Catching the wave of catastrophy...Confidence is more or less the absence of the mess that we constantly see, Acheiving the bliss of making a wish, but never having the faith to believe". Clearly, this record is a wish come true for it's maker. He has honestly made a record that can stand up with the all time classics. It's not too early to call it the best of '07.
