Details:
Which kind of music do you play?
Surfmusic.
Aha, whatâs that, something like the Beach Boys?
Uhmm, not exactlyâ¦.
THE RAZORBLADES from Wiesbaden, Germany have heard this dialogue numerous times. Founded in 2002 by guitarist Rob Razorblade (also known as Martin Schmidt and leader of The Incredible Mr. Smith, another crazy instrumental outfit), the band went on a mission to show the world that there is another kind of surfmusic, in a style the Beach Boys wouldnât have wasted a single thought about.
Thereâs no beach in the area of Wiesbaden, Germany and the sun doesnât shine too much, but with the love of surfmusic in their hearts, the four musicians Rob RAZORBLADE lead guitar, Rocco RAZORBLADE rhythm guitar, Ray RAZORBLADE bass guitar and Romeo RAZORBLADE drums created a style that is now known as 21st Century Surf. a very danceable mixture of twang guitars, punk power and melodies as big as the ocean. Influences range from old school master Dick Dale to Neo-Surf acts like Slacktone and The Mermen.
After a few rehearsals, the band recorded their first CD âGet Cut By The Razorbladesâ in 2002. Soon a record label was found. Belgian Surfpromoter Freddy Spaepen (yes, this is the guy, who brought Dick Dale, Jon & The Nightriders, Slacktone & Los Straitjackets to Europe) released the album on his Label âSurfWaves Records. It gained enthusiastic reviews from surfmagazines, fans and colleagues (among them Slacktone, The Mermen, Pollo Del Mar and Davie Allan to name a few). Since surfmusic is meant to be played live and make people dance, the band did, what every good surfband is supposed to do: Hit the road and rock their hearts out! Since 2003 the Razorblades have toured relentlessly in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria, shared the stage with brothers in arms like Slacktone, Fifty Foot Combo, Turbo Acs and The Kilaueas and left a lot of happy, sweaty young people behind that couldnât help but shake their hair and shake their hips to the sound of the Razorblades.
In 2004 and 2005 the band contributed a lot of songs to various samplers (see discography) and finally found the time to record their second longplayer âThe Dark Side Of The Beachâ. The band remains very busy on europeâs live circuit and continues to show the world another side of surfmusic, far away from the Beach Boys!
Just a load of bullshit? Well, hereâs the opinion of the experts, fans, colleagues and critics.

Hi, Leutz. Ein echt grandioser Austritt gestern bei uns im Juz.

Ich fass mich kurz: ihr wart "huere geil"!

"Get Cut By the Razorblades" is spectacular recording. It has quickly become one of my favorite instro-surf CD's. For me, that means a lot because I own a hell of a lot of them. The writing, arranging, production, and (especially) the musicianship is all first class.

I really like your Razorblades CD! Great stuff, very musical, and I like the Metallica influence, right next to the Slacktone influence
Ferenc Dobronyi/Pollo Del Mar
"Die deutschen Surf-Newcomer aus Wiesbaden überraschen mit ihrem messerscharfen Debütalbum auf dem belgischen SurfWave-Label die internationale Szene. Das Album beinhaltet eine gelungene Mischung aus mörderischen Neo-Surf-Sounds und eher gediegenen posttraditionellen Instrumentals, song- und klangtechnisch durchgängig auf allerhöchstem Niveau.
Frank Plassmeyer/BANZAI!
Get Cut is filled to the brim with exceptionally good surf music. Everyone, including the purists, will enjoy this CD. The Razorblades are from Germany and they prove that you don't have to be from the U.S.A. to play some very groovy surf rock.

I'm really impressed. I don't know who is playing lead but he "outdicks" Dick Dale!
DAVIE ALLAN
Fast and furious aggressive modern surf loaded with fire and glissando mayhem, and fronted by a strong melody line and a large supply of energy! Totally cool and rambunctious. Great drums, solid bass, and electric fire in the guitar. It's also very nicely produced.
PHIL DIRT (Reverb Central)
Great CD! Really a great job! I'm very impressed with the playing of the whole band.
DAVE WRONSKI (Jon & The Nightriders, Slacktone)
Really good. I listened to it a couple of times and it rocks!
DUSTY WATSON (Dick Dale, Slacktone)
I really love your CD!
MIKE VERNON (3 Balls Of Fire)
It really kicks ass! The songs are really well thought out and very good melodies and arrangements! Great job!!
