Classical solo piano, complete "musical callada" by Spanish composer Federico Mompou
28 MP3 Songs
CLASSICAL: Contemporary, CLASSICAL: Traditional
Details:
My sole desire is to write music in which nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluousâ
Federico Mompou (1893-1987)
Bells vibrate and resound in the Musica Callada (The Music of Silence) by Barcelona born Federico Mompou ; twenty eight works in four books written between 1959 and 1967. The title refers to a passage from the âCántico Espiritualâ written in Granada by the 16th Century Spanish mystic poet St. John of the Cross.
âLa musica callada, la soledad sonoraâ seeks to express the idea of a music that is the voice of silence itself; music being silent while solitude itself becomes music.
The essence of the Catalan landscape is also evident; âthe village bell, the great Catalan night with its sideral flickering, the perfume of the cypresses, the shouts from the street and the guitaristâs refrain from the alleys of Barcelona can be heardâ in Mompouâs music. *
The Musica Callada was written over a period of eight years from 1959; not surprisingly there is development in Mompouâs compositional style over this time. Some of the latter works see some experimentation with form and structure, and are generally more technically challenging.
