POP: with Live-band Production, FOLK: like Joni
Details:
Add Rose Rangerâs name to the list that includes Sarah McLachlan, Nellie Furtado and Canadaâs other reigning female songcrafters. Replies (Pacific/Warner Music), Rose Rangerâs debut CD, introduces a startlingly original, seductive, new voice.
A seamless song cycle powered by producer Craig Zurbaâs polished studio magic, (Ranger is also credited for additional production.), Replies showcases the Vancouver singer-songwriterâs pop-perfect, silky, soulful rasp.
Zurba, who has added soundboard alchemy to recordings by Aaron Pritchett and Lisa Brokop contributes to Repliesâ addictive, hook-driven mix on an assortment of instruments, joining a host of Vancouver stalwarts drawn from the cityâs vibrant jazz, blues and rock scenes⦠and Ranger does the rest.
The young musician contributes an eclectic collection of originals plus a couple of smart remakes of hook-addled hits by Zurbaâs old band, Agent and the Australian pop band, Eurogliders. Some songs kick like a mule, and with Rangerâs ranging vocals seem tailor-made for arena stages. Others ride Zurbaâs subtle arrangements and the whispered, emotive cries that punctuate Rangerâs most stunning performances.
Before turning to music, Ranger studied theatre at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles and with the Capilano College Theatre Company in Vancouver, and her vocals combine thoughtful, understatement and dramatic, soul-revealing power.
âI explored other arts, primarily dance and acting, but I've always had a passion for singing and writing,â Ranger explains. â I feel that music is the most powerful medium in our culture, because it is a universal language. Music has the ability to move us into our hearts and out of our fears.â
Besides Rangerâs honest lyrics, brimming with a mixture of youthful idealism and sensual yearning and heartbreak, Replies has a wealth of brilliant ingredients: jazz masters Brad Turner and Tom Colcloughâs haunting horn work; Robbie Steiningerâs succinct, tasty guitar and mandolin sweetening; the late Robbie Kingâs soulfully elegant embellishments on the Hammond B3 organ; a range of exotic percussion by Randy Raine Reusch; and Jerry Adolpheâs authoritative drumming add masterfully to the soundscape Zurba creates in the studio.
Rose has the unique combination of a singer-songwriter storyteller with a melodic pop sensibility. Her songs have been featured in such films as Bonneville (Jessica Lang, Cathy Bates) and Love On The Side (Jennifer Tilly), along with the television shows Beautiful People (ABC), Dawson's Creek (WB), Joan of Arcadia (CBS), Strong Medicine (HBO), Undressed (MTV USA) and Spirit of the Game (CBC). Rose can also be heard singing on the 2002 single "Streets Where You Live" featured on 'Women & Songs 6' (Warner).
A crossover artist who has garnered radio play in North America for her self-penned songs âCall You Mineâ and âWatching Meâ, including her cover of the Eurolgliders 80âs hit song, âHeaven (Must Be There)â. Roseâs 2002 debut album âRepliesâ also showed Rose winning Canadian Musician Magazines 2003 songwriting contest for "Fly" and being awarded top honors for "Fly" at the Just Plain Folk Awards.
Replies is a perfect pop confection, a heartbreakingly beautiful recording debut from an emerging star. Rich with melodic hooks, adventurous vocals and truthful, unadorned lyrics, Rose Rangerâs debut recording is an audacious introduction to an exciting, young talent. Youâre going to be hearing a lot from Rose Ranger. Check out her first on Replies.
