There I was, living with two cats, a dog and a grumpy spouse when something had to give. There were simply too many people under one roof ? one person had to go and it was me.

So I went camping.

I made a list, checked it twice; Smokes, fishing pole, hot dogs, Leinies and just enough gas to get me there and back. It wasn't long before everything was packed and I was fifteen miles due south with visions of catching "the big one" and eating beans straight from the can. I saw myself sitting in front of the campfire, warmin' the bottoms of my old tennies. No wife, no drunk college students, no collections agencies, no?what?

No guitar.

I almost hit the brakes right then, but the thought of facing the chaos at home loomed. I had no real choice but to continue on down the highway.

I was set-up before sundown and sat staring into the campfire coals, trying to figure a way to fabricate some type of melody-making device. Although resources were limited, I must confess that I am not a complete stranger to working from scratch. But one questioned remained: Could I build a trash guitar?

Of course, strings would be important. And I just happened to find four new ones lying on the floor in the back seat of my rusty white car.

So armed with an arms-length of wood, part of an old roasting pan, screws and a hatchet, I went to work. I chipped at the crude wood designing the neck, screwed the screws into one end and attached the roasting pan to the other. I strung the strings. And it worked. Serenity was mine. I had created the first Pantar.
