BARD ROCK Songs of Freedom, Wit & Passion! Reviews of Shasta's Music:
In an Option Magazine review, writer Steve Hecox said: "Shasta is clearly a poet with an overriding sense of social awareness." " . . clever lyricist. . . excellent songs," " . . Hot, tight, inventive and totally professional."
Paul van Kuik of Country Express Radio 0 16 2 Dongen, Netherlands says: "The album stands like a mountain!!!" "...your lyrics remind me of Dylan: rough and clear. Just keep on doing what you're doing. Waiting for more!"
Tony Bates of Highlands 100.7 FM Australia says, "...rootsy sound that simply oozes social conscience. Take it or leave it, but you won't forget it as this is an album that epitomises modern living!"
Genre: Americana
Secondary Genre: Rock
A Bard Rock singer/songwriter with a love for poetry & a stylistic blend of philosophy, history, mystery, political incorrectness, ecology & lonesome love ballads. A definite Bard Rock style of his own which emanates from his Dylan and Neil Young influences during his early years.
Artist Information & Instruments:
Vocal & Harmonica with 6 & 12 string Acoustic Guitars. ("Songs on Albums are fully backed with friends who are excellent musicians I've met over the years!")
Bio:
With one foot planted firmly in the roots of rock, Shasta, a prolific songwriter and singer honed his musical skills in California. Now he plunges us deep into a tapestry of Americana, with his newest CD: "No More Smoking!" The title cut, "No More Smoking!" (poking good natured fun at smoking bans) was featured on a smokers rights website. http://www.smokersclub.com/audio/srmusic.html
Originally from Connecticut, Shasta began writing poetry when he was growing up in New England and by his teens he was considering songwriting. He heard Bob Dylan and became an instant fan. It was Dylan who influenced him to turn his poetic efforts into song writing. He moved to California and on that journey wrote, Chasin My Ghost. Upon his return during what he refers to as emotional weather he wrote the epic, Cold New England Rain.
Others who inspired him include: Dire Straits, Maria McKee, Fiona Apple, Warren Zevon, Jewel, Arlo Guthrie, The Band, The Clash & even Snake River Conspiracy!
Shasta can be heard strumming his 6 &12 string guitar and occasionally blasting his harmonica on his CD's, but his main strength is in his lyrics. The songs are rich blends of philosophy, history, mystery, ecology, and lonesome love ballads.
The CD's are mainly self-produced & had some talented backup. Shasta has an uncanny knack for assembling musicians that fit his style, adding the finishing touch, turning his witty lyrics into thought provoking songs that keep you listening!
He has a style somewhat combining his many musical influences and an unnerving need to tell the world how he feels about certain people and issues.
Since the 90's, Shasta has been strong on the music scene. He is receiving air play in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia. He has traveled through 44 states playing open mikes and jam sessions in cafes & clubs, San Francisco Bay Area benefits and fairs.
Shasta received, "Golden and Silver Poets Awards", from the World of Poetry for his lyrics. At the West Coast Bob Dylan Imitation Contest Shasta won First Place in 1990 and 1993, and won second place in New York City, 1991.
In the words of this passionate Bard Rock Poet: "As the vidiot screens - control our dreams - marines die on foreign shores - And I swear I saw phantoms dressed in black at America's backdoor - Oh, say why can't you see?"
