SOMERVILLE "SLICE OF LIFE"
Ken & Barry Somerville bring a much needed breathe of fresh air to the crowded music scene with the release of their highly anticipated debut CD, "Slice of Life". At a time in the culture when the world has seemingly gone crazy and darkness abounds, Somerville shines a light on the best of the human spirit and gives us reason for hope. "Slice of Life" gets to the heart of the matter and reminds us that life is good - really good. As inspired and uplifting as the music of the early Beatles with a depth and soul reminiscent of classic Roy Orbison, Somerville sings simply of love and delivers the stuff that great records are made of.
Best known for their previous band, New Frontier, the Somerville brothers have been making music for most of their lives. Although they have performed on numerous recordings and have written a catalogue of well over a hundred songs, "Slice of Life" is their first official CD, a collaborative venture for which they teamed up with Nashville hit songwriter Jimbeau Hinson (Steve Earle's Hillbilly Highway, David Lee Murphy's Party Crowd) and producer/guitarist Ray Herndon (Lyle Lovett, McBride and The Ride). "Slice of Life" is a slice of Americana that blends together contemporary country with rock and roots, spanning a spectrum of influence from Vince Gill and Restless Heart to The Eagles, Little Feat, and Jackson Browne. Employing a who's who of world class musicians, the record features performances by renown Nashville artists such as Matt Rollings, Bryan Suttan, and Michael Rhodes among others.
A rare and winning combination of creativity, accessibility, artistry, and heart, "Slice of Life" interweaves unforgettable melodies that feel as familiar as home, with lyrics that sing as effortlessly as conversation. Ken Somerville's rich and intensely charismatic voice resonates deeply and lingers like a memory of someone you feel you've known forever. Joined in supporting vocals and harmonies by brother Barry, the two share a blending that is unique to families who make music together, their voices merging to sound at times like one. Similarly, the strength of their instrumental performances - Barry on bass guitar and Ken on acoustic and electric guitars - lies in their ability to forge a distinct sound and accomplished style as individual players while still creating a singular and solid sonic entity as a band.
Somerville's "Slice of Life" celebrates the simple truths of living without ever being contrived. Songs like the CD's upbeat title track, which tells a story of love's sustenance through the years of every day life, and heartfelt ballads like 'Waiting at the Gate' and 'Do Something Good', lay the groundwork for a record that just makes you feel good. Uptempo cuts like 'Gold Rush' and 'Count on Each Other' set a groove that gets the heart beating and the body in motion like the best cross over hits of John Hiatt or Bonnie Raitt with lyrics that sing of loyalty, reliability, and being true.
After a long drought of popular trends and posturing defining the music charts, Somerville's "Slice of Life" is like water in the desert. An oasis of great songwriting that reflects all that is good in the heart, Somerville's music is a positive indication that everything is going to be all right. Fine production and exciting band arrangements make "Slice of Life" extremely radio friendly and hit single ready, but even so, the work is strong enough to stand on its own on solely the power of their voices and guitar to tell the stories. If the words in their song lyric are true that "Life is not about how long you live, it's what you do with the time you're given", then Ken and Barry Somerville have indeed stepped up to the plate and hit the ball right out of the park.
