Bittersweet is Stephen Mooreâs first studio-produced CD of all-original songs. The album contains many styles of folk, from the richly textured, Nova Scotia shanty sound of Stella Maris, to the pure acoustic voice and flat-picked guitar rendition of Spreading Oak. Stephenâs mastery of several instruments, such as the flute, mountain dulcimer, and autoharp, can be heard throughout the album. The subject matter of the songs covers a wide range of emotions, both serious and amusing, and the music begs the listener to return again and again.

Stephen Moore has been performing folk music for most of his life. He began composing music in the 60s, when the anti-war movement engendered an appreciation for the power of the folk idiom, and was subsequently influenced by the revival of Celtic music and bluegrass. Stephen draws on these various traditions to create his original compositions, which he regularly shares with audiences at coffee houses and festivals throughout Virginia and the surrounding region.

Stephenâs previous album, Sourwood Mountain: American Folk Traditions, Vol. 1, is a masterful collection of traditional music from different regions and styles found in American folk.
