The Vilhauers have been making music together as a family over the past 20 years. Alton and Tonya have harmonized since their wedding day in 1982. As each of their three children grew, so did the harmonies and instrumental accompaniment. All five members of the family contribute vocally in various arrangements of two and three part harmony.
Musical instruments have been a key part of the familyâs repertoire. Alton plays twelve string guitar, bass guitar, and mandolin. Tonya plays keyboard and accordion. Celeste and Ashley play trombone and saxophone (respectively). Both play piano. Caleb plays drums and is learning the bass and six string guitar.
Alton refers to their style of music as âNorthern Gospel,â due in part, to their geographic location in the âfrozen northlandâ on the prairies of South Dakota, but more so because of the unique blend of contemporary melodies and country overtones with southern gospel themes. âI grew up listening to southern gospel quartets and some country music, but I also favor some of the contemporary Christian tunes as well.â
The album âWalk Onâ is an anthology of favorites and some of Altonâs originals as well. âWe offer a range of variety in songs, lyrics and musical genres.â This is truly a treasury of family gems that will bring listening pleasure to any family who enjoys Christian music. Alton relates, âWe had a choice. Either we could do this album or buy a good used family car (but not both). We decided as a family that, thirty years from now, that used car would have long since been retired to the recyclers, whereas, there would be a good chance that our music could still be around. Needless to say, this year we are still driving the old van. But hey, the music sure sounds good coming through the stereo!â
