THE SECOND THIRD MAN IS WOLFGANG SCHALK'S SECOND
RELEASE AS A BAND LEADER.
The record features 11-time Grammy award-winning Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone, Wolfgang Schalk on electric guitar, acoustic guitar and on guitar synth among Wolfgang's working band in the mid '90s--the Wolfgang Schalk Bandett. Brecker delivered some of his finest blowing cutting loose on tracks like the album's title cut.
The sound of the Austrian guitarist, resident in New York since 1997, conveys a tender warmth but also plows new territory with a colourful wide range of sound. Schalk is adept at being comfortable with heavy grooves and melodic lyrics as well. He proves himself as a composer and widens the choice of modern standards.
Using his keen talent for musical invention, Wolfgang Schalk has garnered international acclaim as a gifted guitarist and composer.
Jazziz writes about âThe Second Third Manâ: âSchalk's music today... defies strict classification. This isn't to say that his pieces are radically altering the fabric of jazz playing as we know it, only that Schalk refuses to paint himself in a corner, a feat which can be very easy for a jazz guitarist... can only make a listener hope to expect more unexpected (and good) things from Schalk and his guitar.â
The main characteristics of Schalk's music is his drive to formal control on one hand and his melodic talent and skills as a composer on the other. The guitarist went a typically uncompromising way from Graz over Vienna to New York City. Schalk further developed his style audibly in the cosmopolitan urban pulse of New York and succeeded in establishing himself in its stimulating yet hard-to-survive environment. Leading his own bands, Schalk has recorded four CDs with all original music released under his name. His current quartet features an impressive lineup of notable musicians, including Dave Kikoski on piano, Andy McKee on bass and Ian Froman on drums. With this same band Schalk released âRainbows in the Nightâ in 2002 and in 2005 he signed a recording deal with Universal Music for the release of his new album âSpace Messengersâ.
âThe guitarist's pieces are marked by an open attitude and a bit of gloss and each side of the equation makes the music memorable.â - The Village Voice
âAustrian guitarist Wolfgang Schalk likes to add bits of funk to his intricate boppish compositions.â - Time Out
âSchalk successfully follows his own path... Once a 'model student', he's on his way to becoming a master of his own art and a force to be reckoned with.â - Jazzpodium
âSchalk represents a new species of musician who is comfortable moving through different styles of music. Without problems of integrity, he transfers this huge repertoire into his music and his playing.â - Jazz Live
