Details:
As a multi instrumentalist, playing guitar, slide guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, percussion and trumpet, Jan has been joyfully creating music since she was 8 years old. Growing up surrounded by her musical siblings, Jan played guitar with the family band and trumpet with the school band. Jan took guitar lessons throughout her childhood and ended up teaching by the time she was 13 years old. She continued her studies of the trumpet at the University of Regina.
After university Jan began to focus more on the guitar when she moved to North Vancouver to study Music Therapy at Capilano College. After 2 years of study Jan moved to Kelowna where she started writing music on the guitar with the band Mental Floss. She spent a few years with the band learning how to put songs together.
When Jan moved to Kaslo she spent an incredible amount of time working on the craft of composition. She teamed up with Chris E. Ott and they began to co-write lyrics together. During this time Jan produced 4 albums out of her independent home studio. In 1997 Jan released the self titled debut album "Jan Van Gold". A collection of 10 original songs played simply with guitar and vocals. In 2003 Jan produced an instrumental album titled "Move". This is an album using midi instruments written on the computer using a midi guitar. In 2003 Jan produced another instrumental album titled "Morning Medley For Mom". This is a collection of fingerstyle guitar tunes, an organic mix of original and classical guitar pieces. Most recently Jan has released an album titled "Edge Dweller". This is a collection of original songs on which she sings and plays a variety of instruments including banjo, mandolin, bass, drums, percussion, slide guitar, electric guitar and acoustic guitar. Jan collaborated lyrically with Chris on some of the songs on this album.
Jan has toured extensively throughout the Kootenay region thanks to a Columbia Basin Cultural Alliance grant. She has performed at the South Country Fair in Alberta and at the Folklife Festival in Seattle.
