Details:
Kokomo is New Zealandâs premier blues and roots band, which celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2006. During this time the band has become renowned for dynamic live shows, unique blend of musical styles and smart distinctive song-writing. It also features the unusual horn section combination of harmonica and trumpet. The band has toured extensively throughout New Zealand, performing at all the countryâs major rock, blues, jazz and folk festivals.
Between touring Kokomo has released several albums on Wellingtonâs Jayrem Music label. The first two were collections of traditional blues, while more recent albums feature the bandâs songs.
Kokomo released its eighth album, a live CDâ Kokomo à Gogo - in September 2006. A full-length concert DVD under the same name will be released in April 2007.
Along the way Radio New Zealand has recorded five programmes focusing on Kokomoâs music, and they have appeared from time to time New Zealand television. Kokomoâs music has also been used as the soundtrack for projects as diverse as TV gardening shows and surfing videos. It has also featured on such popular NZ programmes as "Shortland Street" and "Jacksonâs Wharf".
The band has also played with and supported a number of overseas blues and jazz acts, including "Mississippi" Willie Foster, The LeRoi Brothers, New Orleans singer Lillian Boutte, Hawaiian steel wizard Ken Emerson, and legendary guitarist Amos Garrett (ex-Butterfield Blues Band), with whom the band played an incendiary concert at the 1998 Waiheke Island Festival of Jazz.
On the local front they have performed and toured with the likes of Roy Phillips (ex-Peddlers), Hammond Gamble, Jan Preston, Midge Marsden and many others.
