So Who Is This âKarynâ Person?
Ok. You asked for it. Here goes...
My love for music began in the fifth grade. I was exposed (through my parents of course, they were hardcore classical music fans), to Handel's Messiah through the church choir. I was the only child in the choir, singing next to my mom. In junior high I got involved with the choral program and continued until high school. Took some time off then for awhile. In college, I took a brief 6 week extension course on songwriting. I couldn't really play the piano, so the instructor showed me what the notes were on the piano, thatâs how little I knew about chording and writing! I wrote 3 songs out of that class, that the instructor really liked. He had a friend who had a home studio, and so I was sent there to record my little three song demo. I got my first taste of writing and recording there, and I fell in love with it! I bought an industry book and sent it out everywhere, proud of my little demo. To my surprise, amid all the rejection letters, I got several responses from three different labels, all stating that while they couldn't sign me, that I should continue to develop my skills. So I did, for quite a few years. I even moved across the country for one year, to try and make it there on their local scene. Anyway, all that crashed and burned. I came back to LA demoralized and hung up my hat concerning music.
After some years, someone invited me to go see Tori Amos play live at the Greek Theatre. I went, never having seen her before. I should have brought my seat belt! She came out, and the WALL of SOUND began! It was an amazing concert, and in that moment, a tiny spark reignited in my heart concerning writing. I also was amazed by her brutal honesty. I decided that night, that I too would try to show my own vulnerability in my songs. I made another demo some time later, but nothing came of it.
Then life came, I had a little girl, a post-partum depression, an âOMG, what have I done to my lifeâ moment! I ended up on anti-depressants and in front of a psychologist to work out my life a little bit. He was very instrumental in me finding my voice. He said this: âImagine what a perfect day would look like to you, and then GO do it. Start somewhere.â So after six weeks of sessions, 2 months of drugs, and a year of soul searching, I came to terms that I really wanted to write and sing. Even if I wasn't good enough, young enough, pretty enough â whatever.
Some of my friends then threw the gavel down, and through a series of amazing events, I walked into Studio B on November 10, 2005, and met Jon LaCroix and Steve Harriton, to talk about making a demo of new material. I handed them five songs, and they promptly threw 2 out! We kept three, of which you now hear on the album, Luminous Thing, Portal, and I Remember. Out of that, discussion came about perhaps continuing and doing an entire album? So I holed myself up for two months (January and February 2006) on my piano bench and wrote and wrote. When everything was compiled we made the final cuts and the result is the album you now hear. It took a year to complete, while the producers poured their heart, soul and sweat into this project. If it sounds brilliant, it is due to their credit! Dreams sometimes do come true! They take their own time, their own path, and they require persistence! A little elbow grease never hurt either!
I hope you enjoy listening!
Karyn.
