If I ever buy a guitar ...
Before I started to write songs â this was in the nineties â I visited a friend in his small apartment at Mosebacke in Stockholm. My friend is a great guitar player and he played a few tunes and I listened. And then I said to my own surprise: âIf I ever buy a guitar, then Iâm gonna write my own songs.â
Some time later I bought a guitar, started to learn some chords and soon I had written my first (not so great) song. But hey, it was a song and I was really excited. I told my girlfriend at the time and my friends â and they were all âWhat? You? Writing songs?â.
I grew up in a non musical family. No one played any instruments or sang. And the music heard in the apartment was limited to Swedish dance band music and the great Swedish troubadour Evert Taube. Luckily there was a kid who lived downstairs from me who was five years older and he got me hooked on the Sweet and later on introduced me to the Sex Pistols and the whole new wave of punk bands. I was ten years old and wanted more than anything to have green hair and a safety pin stuck through my cheek. I remember me and my friends putting on a show at school in fourth grade miming to the Sex Pistols and going crazy all over the place. Iâm sure my teacher mustâve had serious doubts regarding the future prospects of me and my band buddies.
Of course we didn't settle on miming to someone elseâs music. We started a band. And this unfortunately coincided with my family moving from the town where we lived to a tiny little town out in the middle of nowhere. We tried not to let a few Swedish miles prevent us from becoming rock stars. We tried to keep the band together. But it was too hard. It wasnât just the physical distance. We didnât have any instruments and no one could play anything anyway. So the whole thing kind of fizzled out.
Then I had a really crappy guitar in my teens. It was constantly out of tune and there were always two or three strings missing. So I strummed that thing and made no progress musically whatsoever. The only thing I probably did was drive everybody in the house crazy with all that weird and out of tune strumming at all hours of the day.
Soon that guitar went to itâs grave and the next one I got was the one I told you about before. And as they say â the rest is history.
