The searching no-nonsense lines of Michael Bocian's guitar playing reveal a distinctive mastery which has developed through years of listening and application. Self-taught, his musical studies led him from rock to classical, and finally to jazz. He counts among his major influences artists as varied as Ornette Coleman, Lenny Tristano, Bill DeArango, and Julian Bream, to mention a few. He grew up in Cleveland, spending hours listening to Ornette Coleman's "Science Fiction" and "The Shape of Jazz to Come", as well as a little known Miles Davis recording called "L'Ascenseur pour L'Echaufaud" (Lift to the Scaffold). The result is an intriguing balance of soulful harmonies articulated by clear, crisp and soaring melodies.
