Here's a review of the new Churchills album, "Big Ideas," written by Pat Pierson for the music magazine YEAH YEAH YEAH - 11/02
A very impressive self-made disc (their third, I believe). Less retro-minded power pop but nonetheless hook-filled gutsy stuff. Brimming with memorable tunes, impassioned (not overwrought) singing. Hard to say where this all stands in 2002. If I was a kid, I'd wear the fucker out and probably have it as a best friend when the relationship goes on the skids. With so much stuff piling up in front of me now, all i can say is that any modern American power pop fan worth their cookie should own this. I know I'll be kicking myself near year's end when i pull it out and realize it deserved bigger props. Pick hit: "Ordinary"

The Churchills - Big Ideas - Their debut album, "You Are Here", still ranks as one of my favorite power pop albums. But however good that one may have been, this one is miles better! In a similar style to the Tories and Sugarbomb, this is easy to digest pop with a little bit of balls behind it. I even hear traces of the Foo Fighters here. This is about as perfect as power pop gets. It's crunchy, catchy and infectious and so smooth that there's not a note out of place. Every spin finds new favorites. One time it's the rhythmic "Lights Are On But No One's Home", next time out it's the radio friendly "Run Out Of Things To Say" and maybe another it's the bubblegummy "Close My Eyes". In all, there's something for everyone here. Big ideas? Nope...just big time!

BIO
Most people know The Churchills as "that band that was on 'Spin City' and whose name appears on Meadow Soprano's chest in the HBO hit show 'The Sopranos'." Aside from those high profile gigs, The Churchills have built their reputation on powerful songs and a strong work ethic. Their new full length studio album "Big Ideas" is their third and strongest to date. From the first song "Lights Are On (But No One's Home)," which was recently featured on Lifetime Television's 'The Division,' it becomes clear that this is a band intent on drawing the listener in for the entire 15 songs. Band members Ron Haney-vocals and guitars, Bart Schoudel-vocals and bass and Alex Smolinski-drums offer up this computer enhanced gem which they produced with help from Mark Hart (Crowded House) and Paul Logus (Fuzzbubble, Puff Daddy).

JAPAN- We have officially signed our deal with Excellent/Rockshop in Japan and will have our new record "Big Ideas" released in November with bonus tracks. We will be touring there in February 2003. Anyone wishing to help us to learn the beautiful Japanese language please email us at info@thechurchills.net. Anyone wishing to come with us and eat all our sushi please don't.
GERMANY- Even though we have toured the Fatherland twice, and with great success, we are finally hooking up with a label in the German, Switzerland and Austrian territories. Supermusic will release "Big Ideas" in February 2003 and we will follow up with a March tour. Now that we are affiliated with a label there, we will have no more excuses for not knowing who The Scorpions were.
BIG NEWS ABOUT BIG IDEAS A funny thing happened on the way to recording bonus tracks for the Japanese release of "Big Ideas." We finished a version of "Five Way Down," otherwise known as The Masturbation Song at our shows, and put it on the bonus link of the computer enhanced portion of "Big Ideas." This means that if you buy "Big Ideas" now from our website you get a brand new song! If you already own "Big Ideas" then you know it's the disc that keeps on giving!
SWIMFAN- We have received about 1000 emails from new fans saying "I saw your stickers and posters in the movie Swimfan and I had to find out about you guys." It seems that there is, indeed, a Churchills sticker prominently featured in Jesse Bradford's locker in the new movie "Swimfan." There is also one of our posters on his bedroom wall. Did the producers of the new Fatal Attraction-esque stalker movie ask our permission to be associated with such a lurid depiction of unrequitedlove....NO! Is the fact that it's the #1 movie in the country helping us to forgive this little transgression.....YES!
