Details:
Songwriter, singer, musician and producer David Vidal credits much of his musical influences to Route 66, the American Mother Road that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles. Born in the high desert town of Gallup, New Mexico (mentioned in the famed Bobby Troupe song) and raised in various locales throughout the American Southwest and Rocky Mountains (Pagosa Springs, Colorado⦠Hachiti, New Mexico⦠Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, etc.) Vidalâs music evokes the loneliness, hope, heartbreak and humor of the wide open highway, where you can see for a hundred miles, yet never know what to expect around the next turn.
Heavily influenced by the music of New Orleans and the Deep South, Vidal is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. Through the years he has worked with an eclectic blend of talented folks including Gene Clark, Joe Walsh, Vince Gill and members of Little Feat. He also co-produced and played guitar and lap steel on the critically acclaimed album âWest of Detroitâ by rock/blues vocalist Laura Creamer, currently on tour with Bob Seger.
Known for his gritty vocal interpretations of blues and Americana classics as well as his own heartfelt, poignant and occasionally quirky original compositions, Vidalâs performances are earthy and in the moment, guaranteed to take unexpected turns off the main highway. He has had songs in numerous movies and television shows, including Avalanche, the Oscar winning My Cousin Vinny and the hit series Friday Night Lights.
Everybody Loves Me But You, released in 1999, starts off with the Tex-Mex flavored title cut, with the opening line âdarlinâ since you went away, things get better every dayâ. From there it goes into the Neville Brothers inspired Natural Thing, and on to Hey Dixie, a hoedowny ode to lost love written in a Mississippi motel. The steamy swamp rocker Jacaranda, driven by a relentless overdriven lap steel, comes next, followed by Cheryl Ann, an acoustic ballad. Following that is the reggae tinged Bump City, and then a swamp surf meets the Everly Brothers ditty titled Gravedigger Hill. The country tinged paean to hope amidst poverty Shady Side of Town is then followed by I Wish It Would Rain, which includes the brutally honest line âI donât really want to have a nice day, all I want to do is hurt someoneâ. Then comes the happy go lucky Hoodoo Girl, and the album concludes with a pre-Katrina ode to New Orleans titled The Women Like My Style.
Co-produced by Ted Jacobs, who also played acoustic guitar and keyboards, Everybody Loves Me But You features Skip Phils on drums and Bubba MacNealy on bass. Mastered by Louis Hemsey in Hollywood, it is now available on CDBaby.
