Alex Dolan grew up in Boston as a French Horn player for 15 years and trumpet player for 6 years before learning guitar. He toured with Crash 22 for several years and moved to San Francisco in 2000 as a solo act. Spotlighted by Billboard Magazine as an emerging talent, he has recorded three albums prior to this release: Move, 2003; Owe Me One Cannoli, 2000; and Cherub Conga Line (with Crash 22), 1997.

In 2007 Alex Dolan made his way from the Bay Area to New York, and having bounced around from Boston to the West Coast and back again, and touched by the recent cultural shifts in the country, the name âAmericanaâ seemed fitting enough for the latest recording.

The collection of songs are some of the crowd favorites from his years of touring. The title track, âThis is Older than America,â was co-written by Crash 22 guitarist Jehu Goder and frequently used as the encore song during the live shows. Other tracks, like the more pop-oriented âHopeâ and the punk-reggae âDownâ were all songs that resonated with live audiences but never made it to previous recordings.

The result is an eclectic mix of styles and genres from the singer-songwriter. All of the tracks are grounded by the inventive keyboards and production provided by Jack Hayward, who co-produced Move. One of the most talented drummers in the Bay Area, Andrew Griffin provides inspired drumming and a solid backbone for the recording. Eric Matsuno, the bass behind Move, and bassist for Karmacoda, helps lock in the rhythm section. Lani Michele, who supplied backing vocals for the live act, joins Kali Chow to add some gorgeous harmonies to the songs, especially on âOnly U Can Say.â
