O Pioneers formed early last year and spent 2006 honing their rapidly
developing sound, cementing their lineup, and developing a loyal following at New York City venues like Pianos, the Living Room and Southpaw. They also performed live on WPS1 Art Radio. When their first EP was released, local press took notice:

The band is led by Sara Shaoul on acoustic guitar and vocals, and Matt Rocker on electric guitar and mandolin. Together they combine vastly different musical backgrounds into a organic yet complex sound. Shaoul grew up singing American folk songs with her mom and accompanying her fatherâs classical Persian violin on the drum. Rockerâs parents met playing in a psychedelic rock band and he grew up on the Beatles, Frank Zappa and Van Halen.

They began their collaboration as a folk duo, went on to play together in a rock band, and together have perfected the spare, prog-folk of O Pioneers. They blend alt-country and indie rock with unique rhythm arrangements and vocal harmonies, drawing on such varied inspiration as Fleetwood Mac and PJ Harvey. They are joined live by an amazing rhythm section - Ryan Adams alum Catherine Popper on the bass and Erin McKeown cohort Dave Berger on the drums.The band plans to release their first full-length album later this year.
