Positive. Sophisticated. Beautiful, and Gifted. All of these words describe up and coming musical talent Patrice Perry, whose creative songwriting, unique voice, and passion for positive social change have her poised to become a very influential artist/songwriter.
Her musical style crosses many genresâjazz, Gospel, urban/hip-hop, and even rock. On the same album, you can enjoy a heart-wrenching Gospel ballad with a jazz flow, a high-energy rock/urban fusion song with desperate, searching lyrics, and a happy, upbeat urban song about loving life.
Much of the strength of her music lies in her substantive original lyrics that uniquely combine intellect, literary skill, and passionate emotion, in addition to her unique melodies. But even more unique than her music is her commitment to only creating positive, uplifting music that empowers her fans. Whether itâs about life, love, or God, youâll never hear profanity, explicit sexual undertones, or violence in her music.
Patrice has also been fortunate enough to catch the attention ofâand get help fromâsome of the best producers in the industryâDavel âBoâ McKenzie, an amazingly creative and respected producer who produced and co-wrote âAlone,â track #15 on Mary J. Bligeâs platinum-selling âBreakthroughâ album and has also made music for many other big names, including Jay-Z, Blackstreet, and more; the Arkitects, talented freshmen geniuses with EMI Publishing Group who have created music for artists from Vivian Greene to Janet Jackson, and veteran Sprague Williams, who has worked on music for several established artists, including Michael Jackson, Usher, and Whitney Houston.
Patrice has been singing all of her life. She led solos as a child in her church choir, and in the music ministries she was a part of throughout her teenage and adult years. She won awards and leading roles in pageants and plays. While in high school, she sang background vocals in Missy Elliottâs first group on Missyâs way to stardom. Then, in college, she fell in love with jazz and became a jazz vocalist, performing at college events and even with the University of Virginia jazz ensemble. It was during that time that Patrice found God and her true self. This inspired her to write poems and songs about her new positive life, and newfound love relationship with her Creator. Her desire to positively influence others also spilled over into other literary endeavors, including her launching the first black student newspaper at the University of Virginia, as well as a literary journal at the school. In 1999, she launched Princess Publishing, an inspirational music and book publishing company, and published her first book, âWhispered Words for Godâs Woman.â
Patrice also has a great passion for social change and for inspiring youth. So much so that she lived and worked in the inner city of Richmond, VA, to work with urban youth, recovering drug addicts, the elderly and others teaching them about God's love and the Bible, and helping with schoolwork and even job searches. She one day hopes to inspire other artists to implement specific efforts to improve the lives of America's urban population via job centers, study centers, food banks and more funded by artist efforts.
Throughout all of her musical endeavors, her commitment to the church has stayed. Instead of leaving the place where her training and love for music began to make music that others may perceive as more profitable or popular, she has focused her efforts into making Gospel music more contemporary and relevant.
Patriceâs debut music project titled, Brand New, was released in May of 2003, and nearly sold out of its first printing within a few months. It is currently available for sale at www.patriceperrymusic.com, and at various retail locations across the country. Her newest project, Life Like This, is scheduled for release in spring 2006.
Patrice has had many accomplishments in a short period of time since her debut albumâs release.
In February 2003, two of her songs were selected as finalists out of thousands submitted in the Gospel Music Association's 2003 Regional Competition for Song of the Year. In May 2003, she was a âCatch a Rising Starâ winner for the largest major FM Gospel station in Southeastern Virginia, WXEZ Star 94.1. In July 2003, Patrice opened for Shirley Caesar at one of the Southeast Regionâs largest concert venues, and was a featured artist on âTurning Point,â an international television show aired by the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN). In October 2003, Patrice was a featured artist along with the group Anointed, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. at the 25th Anniversary of Regent University, and she has performed at many other events around the country.
Educated, as well as talented, she received her undergraduate degree from top three U.S. public school, the University of Virginia, and her Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Regent University. Patrice was a successful marketing executive and real estate company owner before she became an artist. She is a member of World Changers Church New York, New York, pastored by Dr. Creflo Dollar, and is a former member of Calvary Revival Church in Norfolk, Virginia, pastored by Bishop B. Courtney McBath.
She has written over 100 original songs and poems, all with inspiring, empowering, and positive messages. She performs her songs and dramatically interprets poems from her book at events across the country.
