about simonfisk
Simon Fisk, born November 27, 1970, is a jazz bassist who has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990âs. He has worked primarily in the piano trio format, and with the same trio since 1997, featuring pianist Chris Gestrin and drummer Tom Foster.
Fiskâs most consistent output over the years has taken place in that band, due in no small part to the rapport between the three musicians, and the constant creative inspiration he receives from Gestrin and Foster. Since 2002, they have released two records on the Plunge Records label entitled âTrainwrecksâ and âIntentâ. Fisk has also appeared on recordings with Chris Gestrin (Poor Boy, The Songs of Nick Drake, Songlines Recordings 2005), Gordon Grdina (Grdina Trio, Plunge Records 2003), as well as a number of singer-songwriter records (Jennifer Lauren, One Trick Pony). Fiskâs most recent project âYou and yoursâ sees him teaming up with the brilliant guitarist/producer Aaron Young (Polyjesters, Sillan&Young). Fisk is lined up once again with pianist Chris Gestrin, and the very creative young drummer, Kenton Loewen, fills out the group.
Fisk has two sides to his musical personality, his free spirit and search for uncharted territory steers him into spontaneous musical expression, freely improvised transitions and solo forms. At the same time, he has a deep fascination with the art of the song, and considers himself a songwriter.
Although his music to date has all been instrumental, his lyrical approach to his composition gives his instrumental interpretations immense song-like qualities. The two sides of Fiskâs personality -the improviser and the songwriter- play off each other and in turn give his band mates open territory to express themselves without formal boundary.
Fisk has performed around the world at a steady pace since 2000, with Canadian pianist Michael Kaeshammer, and with his own trio. His performances convey a wide range of expression, from an emotionally direct spiritual hymn, to dense, abstract, hard driving groove, he favors juxtaposing the extremes of completely free, to formal composition. Fisk has attracted a sizeable following over the years, one that has grown to expect an emotional, intense performance from Fisk and his bandmates.
âMingus at his best! Play on brother!â

âThe simple power of the trio put at a great high level of refinement and creative capability. Alternating lyric episodes with more rhythmic moments, the ways of double bass, drums and piano interlace with melodic soul and harmonic heart. Coming from the lesson of the past, Simon Fisk Trioâs music is for our present, working for a new listening future. Listen to the magic atmosphere of the opening track Live in the Ideal or the beautiful rhythm inventiveness of A Better Day. True genuine art for those loving good emotions.â

âWonderful, probing trio music from an inventive threesome that would rival anything currently on the European scene. Do not underestimate these guys.â
Sammy Goulbourne New Style Radio 98.7fm
â Bass / piano / drums - it doesn't get much more minimal than that, yet the moods portrayed on this CD are wide ranging and full of depth. Across an array of eleven self-composed tracks, bassist Simon Fisk, pianist Chris Gestrin and drummer Tom Foster have put together one of the finest modern jazz sets I've heard in a long while. The music can be hard driving and challenging, and there's an undercurrent of melancholia to a lot of the material. When the musicians lock into a pattern as they do on most of this album, it's a treat to listen to. Just check out 'Live In The Ideal', 'No Obligation' or 'Everything As It Will' to hear a master class in musicians exploring their genre and each other.â

âExcellent! What more can I say? Both releases here are brilliant!â

âSimply fantastic. I don't know what else to say about this disc. Our programmers and listeners all enjoy it very much!
Jason Wellwood, CILU 102.7 FM
âWhile Fisk, Gestrin and Foster are impressive players, they show a maturity that elevates them beyond personal ego; they make each tune paramount. They show a sense of space and looseness that places them in the company of other great young piano trios, including Brad Mehldauâs group and the Esbjorn Svensson Trio. With Trainwrecks, Simon Fisk introduces a new trio that deserves greater exposure; they provide continuing evidence that, along with the few groups that are truly peers, the piano trio is alive and well and still evolving.â

â...beautiful, forthcoming, and challenging...a recording that begs repeated listening...one can only hope that this trio records more music as they continue to challenge musical boundaries.â
Randy McElligot Dec/03
âSimply superlative. World class. I'll place this on the good-stuff CD shelf right next to Ron Carter and Buster Williams. Sweet, soulful and spellbinding. When you play New York, let me know.â
