Dust rose behind the wheels of the old pickup truck like smoke from rockets as it flew down old Route 6. The young driver had determined that the Cherokee County back roads could save him time; he wanted to arrive in Tuscaloosa early to ask Coach Bear Bryant if he could play.
Van Walworth walked-on, played football for the University of Alabama, and earned an engineering drafting degree. In time Vanâs passions for sports and studies expanded to include a wife, family, the ministry, finger picking a flattop guitar, and song writing.
The prayerfully blended voices of a gospel quartet filled the small Southern chapel and the music seeped into the churchyard where young boys played.
âTime to go inside!â one boy shouted as he led the way running through the doorway as the deacon was closing it. Young Mark Howell sat on the front row, and like all sons, he longed to fill the shoes of the tenor above the altar. The power of music led Mark on a 25-year journey performing rock and roll professionally.
Marriage and family influenced Markâs journey and ultimately refocused his music back to its Christian heritage.
In a small southern town on a Sunday after church, Walworth and Howell began to sing together. They took turns with lead vocals and harmonies. Their guitars blended as a glimpse of Godâs ordered steps came into view. Their shared passion for the message in their music invited them to co-mingle lyrics and melodies and polish each otherâs lines and chords as they grasped at the same tethers to the same prize.
The debut album âThe Choiceâ is a result of their collaboration - a new chord, a mature expression, and a sharing of their love for the Father.
