To end his program, Sasaki played a transcription for xylophone of the Poulenc Sonata for Flute and Piano. By the time he finished, you almost imagined that the transcription was more agreeable than the original would have been. In addition to Sasaki's consummate musical abilities, it is a positive and unalloyed pleasure to watch his performance, since he literally must dance up and down behind his instrument to play all of the notes from his florid repertoire.

The record I urge you to buy is a most unusual rendering of Bach's Partita No.3 in E Major, Poulenc's Sonata and (this is a stunner) Bartok's Roumanian Folk Dances (originally written for full orchestra) as performed by Tatsuo Sasaki on xylophone, with Howard Wells at the piano. I am not much one for "novelty" renditions of classical works, but Mr. Sasaki's interpretation of the Bartok Dances is, simply put, astonishing. If you crave a singular listening experience I cannot recommend highly enough this album.

Xylophonist Tatsuo Sasaki displays a variety of touch and a timbral spectrum that would be the envy of many a world-class pianist. His phrasing breathes beautifully in his transcription of Bach's famous E-Major Partita. Rhythmic and dynamic subtleties abound, Bach's brilliant harmonic structures come across with revealing clarity. In the Poulenc sonata Sasaki goes for the quietly jazzily "cool" aspects of the score - flavors lurking just beneath the notes and seldom realized in proper flute/piano readings. The impression is that this xylophone transcription might have been the original, and the flute version, the transcription.
The result is a revealing trip through a lot of music I thought I knew -- and a deepened understanding of the term "virtuosity."
