The majority of the songs on this record are true stories of my life growing up in the Rust Belt and they are, by and large, very self explanatory. However, there is one tune that I would like to talk about, that's Lefty's Song.

I had set out to write a story song about an old, small town drunk who was actually much, much more. I thought about making him Billy the Kid or some other famous outlaw, but that's kinda been done by great artists like Guy Clark and Joe Ely. Then, one day I was driving down to work and trying to work out the last couple of verses, not really getting anywhere because I couldn't figure out who in the hell this guy was supposed to be. Frustrated, I turned the radio on and Townes was singing "Pancho and Lefty." It was like lightning, man! His tune ends, "the desert's quite and Cleveland's cold, and so the story ends, we're told..." and mine picks up shortly thereafter. So, if you've ever been interested in Lefty's story after he sold out Pancho, here's an idea of what might have happened.
