A veteran of jazz, world beat, reggae, ska, latin, rock and funk bands across the country, Jade Synstelien is a musician, composer, arranger and band leader. He has lived and traveled extensively throughout the United States, working as both a studio and performing musician since the age of fifteen.
At seventeen Jade began scoring original music for jazz orchestras and world beat bands such as The Taos Jazz Orchestra, Angry Planet, and The New Mexico Jazz Workshop. This led to composing large-scale jazz works influenced and inspired by Duke, Mingus, Basie, Monk, Beethoven, and Mozart.
Jade came to New York City in 2001 to start a new orchestra and learn form the city's living legends. One month after arriving his 11-piece Staring Into the Sun Orchestra began performing original compositions at the historic Smalls. Following the events of 9/11, Jade introduced âSymphony #1 for American Jazz Orchestraâ for what would be a twelve-week engagement at Greenwich Villageâs Fat Cat Jazz Club.
Jade has composed an extensive repertoire of big and small band works, all of which he performed 4-5 nights a week at Fat Cat throughout 2005-06 in trio, quartet, and as leader of the Fat Cat Big Band. He has been seen regularly at Smalls, Kavehaz, Fat Cat, and other venues throughout the New York area. Jade can also be heard on Nellie McKayâs 2003 Columbia debut âGet Away From Me.â
"Mysterious By All Means" is a compilation of observations, reflections, and meditations on Jade's six-year immersion in the New York underground jazz scene--the art, community, tension, and passionate love of the music. In this album Jade offers his own passion for jazz, its history and traditions, and its power to enlighten and unify, with his unique, emotive, and expressionistic sound.
