Details:
Michael Cavan is a Canadian singer-songwriter, born in Ireland and raised by his immigrant parents in North Bay, Ontario. It was during his formative years that Michael found a love of music and his own Irish Tenor voice, first as a young choirboy and then as a singer and guitarist in the Irish pub scene. Now, as a mature Canadian songwriter, Michael finds himself exploring the stories of his life as he revisits an identity influenced by two different cultures.
The result is Michael Cavan's debut folk CD called âIn A Hundred Yearsâ. Michael creates a work born out of his Irish sensibilities and a Canadian upbringing. This recording is a new, and a familiar, blend of sounds, hook-filled folk songs that you can sing along with and even dance to.
As he worked towards completing his first all-original CD, Michael explained that, âthe process involved finding expression for what it means to be Irish-Canadian. I was musically weaned on a mix of Irish balladeers like Johnny McEvoy and Danny Doyle and Canadian folk icons such as Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen.
âBeing born in one country and raised in another does leave one with a two pools of creative water to draw from.â An experienced songwriter and storyteller, Michael Cavan captures the vignettes of his Canadian life experience and expresses them through his Irish soul and voice. In line with the title of the CD and the bridging of times and cultures, Michael chose an old family photo of his grandparents and his father as a young child for the CD cover.
Michael explains, âI've always maintained a strong connection to my homeland, through the stories my parents would tell my siblings and I. At the same time I draw great creative energy from people and geography of Northern Ontario. These two worlds have inspired me to write music and songs that have personal and historical significance.
âIn a Hundred Yearsâ was recorded and produced by Canadian folk notable, Bill Garrett.
