Music should be meaningful.

There is a lot of good, new music out there, but meaning is being replaced by novelty. I grew up listening to Elton John, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and the like. To me, the words they sung were as important as the notes they played, and the notes they played werenât forced, faked, or pounded out in never-ending fortissimo. It wasnât art for artâs sake; it was a beautiful expression of what it is to be living. And although you could dance to the music, thatâs not all that you could do.

I am Matthew Kimball, and I believe in writing meaningful music. I donât have a Mohawk, I donât drive a Bentley, I donât have tattoos, I donât pretend like Iâm from the ghetto, and I definitely donât smash instruments to compensate for mediocre musical ability. Iâm just a simple musician who writes songs to express his experiences: his pain, his joy, his loneliness, his excitement, his silliness, his seriousness, his fear, and his triumph.

When I was two, I hobbled over to the piano, climbed up onto the bench, and began mashing sound out of the magical, mahogany toy. Thus began my love affair with music. Weâve been together now for more than two decades, but she is still just as beautiful and intriguing to me as when we first met. The songs in my albums are musical manifestations of some of my experiences over those twenty plus years. As a result, they donât all sound the same.

Music isnât one-dimensional, why should musicians be? Iâm not some Hollywood rhinestone, manufactured out of worthless glass, sounding the same song after song. I donât care about marketing; I care about music. There are limits to what one person can do, but music should be as dynamic as the emotions that are behind it. I may not be the maestro of every genre, and there are some genres Iâd just as soon forget about, but Iâm certainly no cookie-cutter, pigeonholed stooge.

When the dust settles, Iâm only just a young man who likes to sing and play the piano. If thatâs enough for you, I hope you find something meaningful in my music.
