Saxophonist Sammie Lee Roberts has been performing with numerous jazz musicians since 1997. In addition to jazz standards and ballads he also he also performs arrangements of popular blues, soul and funk tunes.
Sammie was raised on the East coast, mainly in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 16, he began playing the trumpet. As a young adult, switched to his primary instrument-the alto saxophone. Shortly after, he began performing with small ensembles in various musical settings.
In 1979, Sammie Relocated to Charleston South Carolina and studied with local musician tenor, soprano saxophonist Cecil Alston.
During the late 1980's, Sammie met legendary Be-bop saxophonist Frank Morgan and was inspired and encouraged to hone his skill along with his natural ability "Practice, practice, practice and more practice."
Sammie has studied with some of the nations most accomplished musicians and saxophone educators: Cecil Alston, Brian Smith, Mark James, Dave Goldburg and Frank Fontaine. He views music as a never ending journey and continues to advance with regular coaching sessions with Saxophonist / Pianist Allen Rowe - Stan Kenton Orchestra.
Since moving to Southern California in 1999 where he now resides, Sammie has maintained his passion for Jazz and elevated his playing to include "recording artist".
His debut release "My Voice"...Living the Dream receives airplay in over 29 countries; Australia, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Poland, United States, Greece, and France just to name a few. Sammie performs a wide range of venues small and large alike, in addition to composing, arranging and scoring for various commercial outlets including media and film. Several times a year he is a featured guest on radio programs produced and aired across the nation by the American Radio Network.
Sammie maintains close associations with and is mentored by musicians that have made tremendous contributions to jazz and the musical art form, you hear them on the radio, on film, soundtracks and CD's; you see them on television, film, in live concerts and on video. Sammie's admiration toward his colleagues is unbounded as they are the lifeblood of the American music art form, JAZZ.
