Gaining much influence from the folk, blues and jazz stylings of the 1920s to 1940s, Tiiu's voice displays a kinship with the souls of yesteryear, while her songwriting delves into the constants found in life and love. A bit of a wanderer, Tiiu has achieved notable recognition in all the Ontario towns she has called home over the years, as a remarkable singer-songwriter and compassionate performer. Audiences are taking note further a field, as she has been diligently and extensively touring Central and Eastern Canada. The past year saw many opportunities for Tiiu, as she shared stages with Ian Tamblyn, Ember Swift, and Sarah Metzner; she was invited into CBC Radio to speak about her work on numerous occassions; and she completed a five-song EP, "Gone are the Days", which features performances by Mike Evin and David Celia. Receiving critical acclaim, it's been noted that Tiiu's EP marks strong development in her songwriting, with a "rootsy-bluesy sound that suits her warm timbre" (Fateema Sayani, The Ottawa Citizen).
Tiiu is determined to use her voice to contribute positively to her community, and this resolve has lead to numerous exciting opportunities, including her receipt of the 2006 Beth Ferguson Award. Granted every year in ceremony on the Ottawa Folk Festival's mainstage, the award recognizes an Ontarian female singer-songwriter whose work involves social and women's issues. One strong component of Tiiu's work is her dedication to organizing and performing at multi-artist benefit concerts that raise awareness about key social issues. In 2006, she was a key organizer and performer at a compelling music-meets-politics event in Ottawa, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of the youth vote in Canada. She also successfully organized and performed a sell-out concert in aid of Afghan refugees in 2003, featuring a headline performance by Jian Ghomeshi (Moxy Fruvous, CBC).
Tiiu's formative years as a singer-songwriter and performer were spent in Guelph, Ontario, playing both solo and with rock bands (MDK, Nice Nice). These years have proven to be the foundation of her musical success, and the ties have remained close as she continues to collaborate with her old bandmates (now members of Guelph-based rock band, What the Thunder Said). It is also in Guelph that Tiiu began working as a sessional studio vocalist. This work continues as Tiiu most recently contributed Sarah Metzner's 2006 release "Daybreak Morning".
