Details:
The Abyss was formed in 1995. This album, A Fleet of Sixty, was their second full-length album. Most of the songs were written by David Sery, the bands lead singer and lead guitar player. The band consisted of five players: guitar/lead vocals, bass, keyboards/back-up vocals, drums, and percussion/back-up vocals.
The band was known for not just their album work, but also their live shows. They, like other "jam bands" so to speak, were not afraid to try different things right on the spot. They would begin songs differently, end songs differently, connect songs together, or even make up songs right there on the spot. They felt that that was the essence of a true musician- one who could improvise well with other musicians.
The sound quality of "A Fleet of Sixty", is due to the great opportunity The Abyss had to record at an excellent studio, with an excellent engineer. The albun was digitally mastered, which gives it such a clear, easy-to-listen-to sound.
The members split from the band in 1997/98. The bassist, Matt Barto, went off with the keyboard player and backing vocalist, Rex Kalehoff, and the percussionist/backing vocalist, Jay Whitcomb. The lead singer and guitar player, Dave Sery, played with Dan Epand, the drummer, for a little while. Dave Sery in March of 2005 made a solo album called, "Sery". It is unknown at this time what the other members of the band are doing, but if one were to search the internet, they could probably find out.
Not too sound overly confident in any way, many have made good comments about "A Fleet of Sixty". Of course there may have been a good chance that others have perhaps not liked the album, as people's tastes can differ at times. But, the band does not remember too many bad opinions like that, and feel that their hard work resulted in something still holds up after all these years. Long live The Abyss and, "A Fleet of Sixty"!
