Thanks for having a look at this page.
Buddhagrass III is the third CD of four that we recorded. The first one is called âBlack Iceâ, the second is âShakinâ the Bluesâ and the fourth is âAt the Edgeâ.
We are planning to reprint the ones not available now, and they will also be available at CD Baby.
Tom Elgie and I (Olin McKay) have been playing music together for a good ten years.
Gerrald Weins, our old bass player, joined up with us in 99 when we decided to do our first CD. Gerry left the band after the third CD and John Hall, has filled his spot.
Tom plays a well-played 1970s Martin and I play Lap Dobro, Bottleneck and a Thompson six-string acoustic. All three of us have been playing music since we were kids, Iâm talkingâ back to the 50âs and 60âs. I guess we are best described as Canadian born and raised singer/songwriters. People always ask, whatâs this buddhagrass? I still really donât know what to say except that it has a lot of different stuff in it but thereâs not much to it. Huh!
The sound of a bell on a fur trappers lead horse or the sound of a steam whistle or the quiet of 40 below must be ingrained in us, not necessarily by way of us hearing them, but through the kitchen table tales that we grew up with.
On both sides of Tomâs family there are world champion rodeo people and he has related to me some of the stories. Thereâs one about a mysterious wampum belt that appeared in the family possession. No one knows for sure but it is thought that his dad purchased it or won it at a rodeo. I suspect there was a beautiful indian maiden or a stunning brave and maybe a knife fight attached to the tale. However the story went, Tom wrote a song about it (Wampum Belt, on Black Ice) that really lets you taste the dust and hear the Model Tâs putt through the midway.
When I was about seven years old a couple of guys came over to try and rouse my dad into a prospecting venture. The table was soon covered with maps and the arms were waving and pointing and the fists were thumping. There was booze spilt also. Within a week or so of seeing those maps and rocker box plains I had to build myself a sluice and grizzly. I set up in our little creek and commenced mining. When I think about a seven-year-old kid doing that all on his own, no wonder I feel this way about the land and the people. Not much gold found but lots of dreams run over the riffles.
This whole buddhagrass thing is a great way for us to play in the sand box and pass along a little of our selves.
