Notes about the Nu Quartet project:
The compositions and performances on this album are born from my idea to create a different environment for improvisers. The players draw from melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and structural content found in the compositions, using that material to spontaneously improvise and synergistically explore new areas. The structure is open and yet defined by specific elements, leading to a cohesive work between composition written by composer and composition improvised by the ensemble.
Dave Harris Bio:
Since coming to Boston in 1980, David Harris has distinguished himself as a trombonist, pianist and composer on countless recordings, movie and television soundtracks, and concert stages. He is co-leader of Bostonâs Jazz Composers Alliance ( an 18 piece avant-garde ensemble) pushing the envelope of new jazz composition and group improv . He is a recent 1st prize recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship for music composition, having won this award previously in 1997. A featured performer with world music ensembles Brass Planet and Les Miserables Brass Band, David has toured the world , including performances at the Montreal and Berlin Jazz Festivals and clubs such as the Bluenote, Knitting Factory, and Tonic. A founding member of the acclaimed Klezmer Conservatory Band, he's been at the heart of the American klezmer revival movement, as his work with the ensembles Shirim and Naftule's Dream attests.
