Once upon a time there was a little girl with big dreams and a broken heart...
Born and raised in rural Tennessee, my family were all quite musically gifted, though none had ever sought fame and fortune. My beloved father, Jim McGrath, was a football coach, teacher, and basically a natural at anything he pursued. A proverbial light in the room and a fabulous singer, it was his passion for people and what he believed in that served as my biggest influence. His untimely passing when I was eleven marked the beginning of a series of family tragedies that challenged me throughout my teenage years. Luckily, though, I always had a very strong spirit which filled me with inspiration, allowing me to overcome my trials through writing, singing and acting.
Already weathered by being on my own at the age of 17and desperate for direction, I auditioned and was accepted to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. But unfortunately, my financial restraints didnât allow me to attend. So I put myself through a local Christian University, where I found strength, love and a new outlook on life. Ready to get out and see the world, I graduated in just three years with a bachelorâs degree in Broadcasting Communications.
During my second year in college, I found my true calling after receiving a guitar for my 20th birthday. Everything came to me so naturally with it that I was able to teach myself to play. Soon, I was performing on stage in college with just me and my guitar. It felt like Fate was wrapping his arms around me, whispering that everything would be okay from then on.
And it was, for I could always use words to express emotion in a way that people both appreciate and relate to, and now I could use the magic of music to reach out to people in another profound and effective way. And so shortly after graduation, I moved to Memphis, and over the following year, wrote and performed regularly in the cityâs numerous blues clubs. Feeling the need to spread my wings, I moved on to Nashville for three more hard-but-enlightening years, which took me from a hard working amateur to a hungry, self-confident professional. But though Nashville is truly one of the music capitals of the world, I once again found my ambitions yearning for broader and more varied opportunities.
So I held another garage sale and headed west to the City of the Angels. Now, almost two years later, Iâm still reaching for my higher self, and along the way, I try to be a proverbial light, shining through a window of peace and love to all... especially the many other talented people out there on similar journeys.
