I grew up in a big, musical family in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with 3 bathrooms and two pianos. When I was 13, I started playing the guitar and improvising on the piano. My older brother had a drum set and showed me a few things. At 16, I was invited to join a band-The Magic Egg- playing mostly drums, with a little guitar and some backup singing. I didnât start singing solo until I was 19.

My early work as a musician was mostly in churches, on retreats, at weddings or around campfires. I played in a few concerts and was part of a group called New Life. I was a music director in a couple of settings. Several years ago I joined a cover band called Roadstar which was great fun but long hours. Now I am out on my own playing popular songs and a few originals. Iâm keeping my âday jobâ but scaling it back so I can use my musical gifts on a more regular basis.

"Box of Crayons", my first CD, was released in 2004. It is personal and yet, I hope, universal in it's themes of longing, surviving, breaking through, trusting and celebrating. Four of the songs are originals. The other four are cover tunes which I fell in love with. Other artists on the CD include Lisa Fink, my wife Sherie, my daughter Sonja and Dan Utz.

The title song, "Box of Crayons", is a story of when I was 4 or 5 years old and received a box of brand new crayons from my Godmother. I couldn't bear to use them because they were so perfect- unlike the crummy old crayons I was used to. Anyone who has ever tried to create a piece of art and been a bit perfectionistic should be able to relate to the song.
