Is it Music?... Is it Spoken Word? No⦠not quiteâ¦Is it Experimental? Or probably just Traditional? Mmm⦠maybe Latin⦠NO, definitely not Latin, although WE are⦠Is it even Music? We had a hard time labeling what this CD is because there is no category for us yet. Finally we thought of a word that may describe it best: THEATER

Not quite like the one in happy Broadway, not the boring one type that makes you want to sleep, just THEATER... different... the one THEATER in which each actor is an instrument, the THEATER that is ALIVE and makes you feel ALIVE. The one that is complex, unwonted, mysterious... just like life itself.

âAbyssmoâ is a compilation of the vocal and rhythmical work of our performance âOedipusâ Legacyâ (La herencia de Edipo) which is an adaptation (in our own peculiar way) of Sophocleâs tragedies: Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colono, and Antigone.

How do we Mexicans got to this? Well, when we were in Poland we heard that nowadays there still are rural communities in Albania that keep many ancient Greek traditions. The funeral is a very important celebration. They invite women to start to cry and sing laments to encourage everybody else to cry, too. The whole community cries and sings together; and at the end their bodies heal and rest. They strengthen their spirit to accept destiny.

We decided to retake the origin of lamentation because we noticed that what this performance needed was something like traveling through a wild unpredictable river with the strength, the danger and the life of what has not been conquered. Traditionally, lamentation is a polyphonic composition with four voices âas we understood-: the GOD (the drone), the BEAST (the one who cuts), the one who gives or takes (the CHORUS) and MAN (the melody).
So the lamentation of our performance came to life through vocal and rhythmical improvisations with the traditional polyphonic structure. All of this âmusicâ is produced by the actors live on each presentation and has been finally captured in this CD just like a sample of what falling into an abyss may sound like...
