Details:
Reverend Perry Lee Radford credits his father, Deacon Nathaniel Radford, for inspiring both his initial influence and his most profound earthly musical influence. At 3 years of age he recalls the sounds of music in their house in Rhodell, West Virginia, produced by the band which bore his fatherâs name, âNat Radford and the Jolly Boys.â Reverend Radfordâs father attended West Virginia State majoring in music and after a long hard week in the coal mines of southern West Virginia these coal-miners by day and songbirds by night would brush off the coal dust, pick up their musical instruments and the hills would be truly alive with the sounds of music, i.e., the music of the likes of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Deacon Nathaniel Radford encouraged each of his sons to learn a musical instrument and though he encouraged Reverend Radford to learn to play drums, Reverend Radford was destined to play the piano, often playing on special occasions at the Pentecostal Church in a little unincorporated town called, âTommy Creek.â
In 1964 his family moved to the Washington D.C. area where Reverend Radford began taking formal lessons at the Armstrongâs Cultural Center in N.E. Washington D.C. under the direction of Miss. Lillian Armstrong where his appreciation for classical music was nurtured. While attending Eliot Jr. High School Reverend Radford sang in the school choir and also performed with a group called, âThe Boys of 9-217,â who later changed their name to, âThe Fascinations,â under the tutelage of Ms. Lebowitz. Though Reverend Radford attended church regularly after moving to Washington, D.C., he did not use his piano-playing talents very much in his home church. He played extensively for a band on his job called, âP-Hausâ, which is named after the organizing members of the group who performed mostly at the, âCelebration of Culturesâ events on his job. In the year 2004 Reverend Radford felt a strong urge to fully dedicate himself to the organization of the group now called, âPraise Projectâ. The great majority of the musical gifts of Praise Project are displayed in the New Life Baptist Church that he organized in January of 2006. He is grateful for the support of his lovely wife who sings on the CD and the support of his faithful friend and co-worker whom he lovingly calls, âThe Finnish Connectionâ, Ms. Nina Ohman. Most of all he gives God the glory for saving him one night on the streets of Minnesota Avenue in Southeast Washington D.C. and considers it a privilege to serve him.
The CD itself was created first to praise God and second to attempt to introduce some new and different sounds to the worship experience.
