Details:
Ryan Lee walks along a musical fault line. On one hand, he is a classic acoustic singer-songwriter with an ache in his voice and a story in his words. On the other, Lee is a master pop confectioner, threading ambient electronica through danceable modern pop textures. The end result of Leeâs out-of-the-way creative trajectory is a sublime, enjoyable musical product âthe type that leaves audiences sated and critics scrambling for the nearest laptop.
During the flurry of press following the release of The Pride Before the Fall, the Twin Cities performerâs first album, journalists heaped praise upon him, comparing his music to the Love-Cars, Wilco and Calexico and cooing over his passionate vocal delivery. Among the words used to describe his singing were âwarmâ, âgravellyâ, âstarkâ, âemotiveâ, âexpressiveâ and âearnestâ. Leeâs liberal use of electronic ear candy and the tasty virtuosity of his backing band were also the subject of admiration. Writers marveled at how three people could generate so much sound.
Ryan Lee, the next installment in the Twin Cities performerâs career, both expands upon and reigns in Leeâs trademark sonic tapestry. Lee chose to streamline the creative process, collaborating with his brother Joe (drums, percussion, samples) rather than a multi-member band. The duo recorded drums, guitar and vocals in the studio with Matthew Freed engineering. They then took the basic tracks home and added piano, samples and additional vocals.
Ryan and Joe spent months adding subtle nuances and colors to the songs, and their painstaking care paid off. Ryan Lee is rich and inviting, casting Leeâs vocals front-and-center, atop a deeply orchestrated blend of acoustic instruments, drumbeats and synthesized sound.
Ryan Lee played several shows around the Midwest in support of The Pride Before the Fall, and he is gathering the steam he needs to continue on that path with Ryan Lee. He and Joe are performing as a duo, giving Ryan the flexibility he needs to take his show farther distances and break into other markets around the country.
