Desert folk punk rock americana for urban lifestyles
15 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Progressive Rock, FOLK: Modern Folk
Details:
Sarsaparilla have set their aim on becoming a massive, organic story telling machine that no one can help but shake a leg to. Sarsaparilla's sound, as of 2006, is best described as desert folk punk rock Americana for urban lifestyles. The music is based on the acoustic ramblings and surreal life of drifter/songwriter Brandon Miller. After penning songs all over the United States and Europe, Brandon stumbled across the
other members of the group (multi-instrumentalists Nate Kowalaski, Scott Moran, and Adam Winokur) on the street of his grandparents' home in suburban Philadelphia in late 2005. They have since been transforming these sticks-and-stones songs into larger sonic structures composed of dueling percussions and throbbing bass undercurrents as well as rabid textures of electric guitar, melodica, broken toy pianos, brass, banjo, bows, foot stomps, found sound tape recordings and sing-alongs.
The songs off their first LP Fuck It, Drive On speak of sex and dying, and the relationships between decay and growth. FIDO was recorded primarily live, in an empty mansion on the rural outskirts of Philadelphia, welcoming the presence of outside noise.
Reminiscent of early Modest Mouse, Elliot Smith, Interpol, and Crazy Horse, this is a record about slipping into one's self hood while living within the madness of modern civilization, and the choices that are formed along the way. Two Lo-Fi EP's, Spring Blood Tonic and New Words for Marina, were also made during 2006. They carry much of the same themes as FIDO, but soft bedroom acoustics, hushed layered vocals, and the outside bleed of city sounds from an un-insulated room in the ghetto set a more introspective, personal tone.
In the dictionary sarsaparilla is defined as a medicinal bramble vine that blooms clusters of small white flowers. Sarsaparilla take their name from a favorite drink requested by Brandon's grandfather âa.k.a the keeper of the beesâon his deathbed.
Discography:
Rough Cuts ( 11/05)
Spring Blood Tonic ( 5/21/06)
New Words for Marina (12/03/06)
Fuck It, Drive On (3/20/07)
Rub the Rabbit: a Collection of Old Hats ( 04/07)
