ROCK: Acoustic, POP: Folky Pop
Details:
Sam Barron begins 2007 with his third release, The Only Constant. The album, produced by Tom Curiano, combines country elements with urban pop. Samâs acoustic songs are fleshed out with swooning pedal steel hooks and diced with cheeky banjo lines. Curianoâs drumming is full of touch.
After years of traveling and performing throughout the US and Mexico, Barron has finally landed back in his native city, New York. During his absence, he accomplished much. In Austin, Texas, the independent label Kranzke Records signed Sam. Combining his efforts with Luke Abbey, drummer of the Gorilla Biscuits and Warzone, the duo put out a masterfully subdued album, Tempus Fugitive. Sam also held down a weekly gig playing bass for Joe Valentine on the famous Sixth Street strip during that same time.
For a period of eight months, Sam lived in a small fishing village in Mexico where he performed boleros and Mexican standards alongside mentors. While there, Sam also participated in a local revolution to protect endangered wetlands. The movement resulted in great success for the local fishermen and Barron put his pen to use sending articles to the US, one of which was published by the Washington DC-based Environmental Law Institute.
Sam eventually returned to his native city and began hitting the pavement with his guitar. He quickly found a home at the Sidewalk Café. He also began playing every Wedensday at Lillieâs in Red Hook, Broooklyn. After a year of Wedensdays at Lillieâs, Sam moved on to set up a monthly showcase at a bar in Brooklyn called Moeâs where he booked other acts and played the First Sunday of every month. It was at one of these shows that investors heard Sam and decided to produce a second album. That album titled All Over the Place was produced by Charles Newman. Newman, who produces the Magnetic Fields, Earlymay and The Davenports, knew Barronâs songs were viable and immediately set out putting a band together for the album. That band had Tom Curiano in it. The albumâs release sent Barron on a solo tour to the South. More importantly, it laid the foundation for the musical relationships at the center of Samâs work today.
This spring while supporting The Only Constant, the band begins recording their next album. That project will explore Barronâs ska and rock catalogue. Also waiting in the wings for release is a solo anthology.
