ROCK: 60's Rock, POP: Beatles-pop
Details:
The result of obsession, Vanilla to an Englishman is Secondary Modern's second record. The record comes after much attention in the local (Southern Illinois) marketâmore than their fair share of press, a growing following, etcâcreating the feeling that this is, somehow, the right time for the band to release an album. Vanilla to an Englishman is a far reaching, diverse piece, ranging from the guitar-rock intensity of âPeppermint Teaâ to the cryptic lyricism and arrangements of âpiano / guitarâ and âBirds.â Sprinkle in the sparse folk of âCocaine for Egosâ and the alt-country / Mersey Beat of âCigarettesâ, and you have a damn fine album.
"Not only as creative as most groups who have ever called Little Egypt home, this trio has the musical chops to pull off their ambitions, even in live settings, and they wrap whatever they play in a sonically appealing pop package.
-Chris Wissman, Editor, Nightlife (âBest New Band of 2006â article)
âSuddenly I was encouraged that music was not dead in Southern Illinoisâ¦a more challenging mix of Beatle-esque pop, and smart late 70s post-punk.â
-Brent Stewart, Flipside
â[Vanilla to an Englishman is] structured with sometimes cryptic lyrics that flow over ballads and the kind of straight-up raw guitar rock like grandma use to make (that is, if your grandma was Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar, which would be something, really).â
-Andrew Voris, Nightlife
