"Sue West plays guitar, sings, and writes songs, finding inspiration in the rural places of Wisconsin. Great songs for kids, grandparents, and folks in between." For the month of April, 2007, 10 of the sales of my cds will be donated to Silkesnas, a grassroots nature preserve and learning center in Spring Valley, WI.
I enjoy writing and recording songs about life here in rural Wisconsin. You may know me as the "Egg Lady." Life on the Rush River with my hens and my dawgs is full of poetic moments. I have captured many of them in the songs that I share through my performing and my cds. If you have any curiousity at all about what fills the thoughts of your local organic egg producer, look no further.
A former geologist with a passion for poetry and literature, and granddaughter of farmers, poets, and lumberjacks, I think I have a good appreciation of the natural world around us, and have a real love of talking about nature, faith, and peace through my music. I find such a serenity, joy, and healing in nature, and this is what I hope to communicate to others.
These songs are the things I hear when I wade into a cold river, or lay down on the ground and look up at the waving branches of the pines. These places of the land have a voice. Meet with them and be blessed, as well.
I have always loved folk music, and have had the chance to learn from some great folk musicians over the years. I especially love writing songs, and joining in on harmony singing. I now have the honor of playing with two very talented gentlemen in the Rush River Ramblers. Tom and Eric have a great deal of knowledge about old time music, and we've had great times practicing tunes at home over coffee in Tom's straw bale house, or playing out at farmer's markets, square dances, and CSA's. I always knew I loved old time when I heard it, but never knew how to play it. Tom and Eric have been great teachers and friends as well as great music partners. I have alot to learn about how to correctly sing old time, but as we have been working all winter on our square dance tunes as well as many new singing songs, hopefully you'll get to hear us doing a concert set sometime this summer. Tom and Eric have great voices for old time, and I think we do a good show, especially when Eric puts the board down and clogs!
I am now starting up in a new band, as well, the Rosewood Folk Ensemble. We'll have songwriter Beth Ray on guitar, percussion, keyboards, and voice; you can check out Beth's music on CDBaby. Former "Jameson Drover" songwriter John Lenarz will join in with his meticulously-performed guitar, vocals, mandolin, and harmonica. The very talented regional musician Dr. Dennis Cosgrove will play guitar, fiddle, and mandolin, and with his expressive voice, Dennis brings a special touch to his celtic, bluegrass, and cowboy songs. We'll be playing one Saturday per month at the West WInd in River Falls. Beth and I will also provide music to the UCC Church in Prescott. This will give me a chance to do some old time gospel as well as some of my original old time gospel and folk/peace spirituals.
There are lots of great folk musicians in Western Wisconsin, and there is a growing network of open mic/jam sessions happening in many local communities. Check out a local open mic, and you'll find musicians who are just learning the ropes, as well as those who have performed all their lives. The quality of performance at these open mics is getting so good I'm almost scared to play at them anymore!
I have recorded 3 cds of original music; "Field and Wood" is my second. It contains my newest songs, and some old ones from my younger days. Quality of detail was sparse on some of them, neccessitated by my slim recording budget in terms of time and money. I apologize for the weak spots. But overall, this cd has my strongest songwriting and it has some songs that I am truly proud of. This would be the one to buy if you wish to hear my music. I'll begin recording again soon, and plan to take it slower.
This cd is dedicated to the memory of Carl Terwilliger of River Falls, an amazing musician, songwriter, friend, voting Democrat, and caring soul whom we have recently lost. I remember him especially by the inclusion of my old compositions, "Healing" and "Say Sea," which I used to play in the days when Carl and I hung out more often. I recorded these for Carl the day after learning of his diagnosis, and cut the cd at that point, so that he could hear it. I hope that these peaceful old songs can bring healing to others as well.
Carl is the person that taught me to take all of the time I need to tune my guitar, a rule I occasionally break out of sheer nervousness to get started with a performance, an error I always regret. Carl knew that all of the small details, well done, make a harmonious whole. He will be missed.
My third cd, "Wash Me Up On the Shore," is a compilation of my old-time gospel and peace/folk spiritual originals, including several previously unreleased religious songs. This cd will soon be out on CDBABY, but now you can order it from me for the price of $10.00 at the address below.
Also, I have compiled a book of 14 original folksongs for Western Wisconsin. If you would like to order one, please send $20.00 to the address below.
From my farm, I sell Wisconsin beeswax products. I am not a beekeeper myself, but I live in apple orchard country, and I purchase the raw materials from several nearby friends that let me have some of their precious beeswax.
I sell beautiful, naturally fragrant hand-dipped tapers at $6.40 the pair, and beeswax hand balm in tins or lipbalm tubes for $4.00 each.
I also sell my grandmother's delightful self-published childrens book, "The Many Troubles of Roscoe Brown." It rings surprisingly true about life growing up on a poor Ozarks farm during the Prohibition Era.
The address for these items is:
PO Box 146
Spring Valley, WI 54767
My home products are also for sale at Whole Earth Grocery and Second Chances in River Falls, Red Barn Cafe and Village Pharmacy in Spring Valley.
If you are uncomfortable with internet purchases, inquire at these places for my beeswax, and at Whole Earth for my cds.
