URBAN/R&B: Funk, HIP HOP/RAP: Hip Hop
Details:
Big Pimp Jones is a funk/hip-hop band from Philadelphia, PA formerly known as K.R.O. and the House Band of the Apocalypse. The band has gained fans for their unique brand of new and raw funk, which combines classic sounds inspired by the great funk artists of the past with both sung and rapped lyrics.
The bandâs six previous recordings resulted in worldwide fan support and radio airplay through a variety of funk music outlets, and a number-one mp3.com download for its genre (âK.R.O. is on the Mix Tonightâ for hip-hop).
Named after Camden, NJ's most trafficked and most ho-populated street, Big Pimp Jones' newest album features longer songs and deeper grooves. On the fast side, the album contains the title track and 'The Workout', two warp-speed endeavors meant to work the dance floor with your best Soul Train moves. On the slower hip-hop side, 'Player's Ball' works a slow bouncy groove and four-part harmony chorus, while 'The Eight Immortals' is an eleven minute, eight-verse epic telling the story of lead singer/rhymer K.R.O. learning some of his rhyme styles.
BIG PIMP JONES IS â¦
Keith Foster a.k.a. Jo Jo Shorty â Vocals
Favorite Blaxploitation flick - Black Belt Jones
Foster is the President of Bad Funkmatron Records and founder of Big Pimp Jones. After fronting hardcore band Threshold and competing on the freestyle rhyme circuit for a few years, Foster dedicated his efforts full-time to BPJ in 1996. A vinyl junkie and part-time DJ, Foster expands his collection crate by crate, searching out fresh beats, funk and rock.
Chris Williams a.k.a. Pooky â Bass
Favorite malt liquor - Hurricane
Williams is BPJ's longtime bassist and co-writes (along with Foster) the majority of the band's material. Chris is schooled in multiple instruments and plays keyboards on the studio recording as well. He used to play a right-handed bass upside down, like Jimi Hendrix ("because a right-handed bass was cheaper"). His bass sound is straight out of James Brown's mid-70s recordings (the ultra-funky ones).
Greg Oliva a.k.a. Vick Damone â Guitar
Favorite time to call it a night â six in the morning
An accomplished musician, Oliva plays guitar for BPJ but is also a skilled rock drummer. His diverse guitar styles often define the BPJ sound, and can range from chunka-chunka James Brown to arena rock to wahed-out funky distortion.
Steve G. a.k.a. Sweet Toof â Drums
Biggest musical influence - Primus
G. joined the band in 2003 and is the bandâs fourth drummer (eighth if you count people who played drum machine beats live as âdrummersâ). The youngest member of the band is trained on bass and guitar, has a progressive / jazz influence and a hard-hitting rock and soul drum style. He sets the tone with loud, thick-snared beats.
Jay Myers a.k.a. DJ Tone Def - Turntables
Favorite Dope Sneakers â custom-painted Air Force Ones
Jay is the most recent addition to BPJ and adds scratching to the band's sound. Jay DJs clubs and parties on the side in addition to working on graffiti art (he has designed a few album covers) and an ever-growing sneaker collection.
