Bay Mayn Mames Shtibele - At My Mother's House
Yiddish Folksongs sung by Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman
*NEWS FLASH! BEYLE SCHAECHTER-GOTTESMAN HAS BEEN AWARDED A NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT OF THE ARTS IN 2005 FOR HER YIDDISH SINGING, SONGWRITING AND POETRY!
REVIEW BY GEORGE ROBINSON, JEWISH WEEK, NYC 4/1/05
41/2 STARS OUT OF FIVE!
"Schaechter-Gottesman is a wonderful Yiddish poet and songwriter, but
this set, recorded in the mid-90s, showcases her strong
Dietrich-like singing on a program of folksongs. It's not a pretty
voice, but it has a toughness and sass that carries you along. The
first half of the CD features Alicia Svigals on violin and Lorin
Sklamberg on accordion; the second is a live set, mostly
unaccompanied. The a cappella material is touching and
Schaechter-Gottesman's voice is surprisingly supple. A warm glow
permeates the entire recording."
REVIEW BY CHANA MLOTEK, YIDDISH FORWARD,
May 27th, 2005
"....the selection and quality of the songs is worthy of praise...she is a born folksinger. Beyle is faithful to the authentic folk-tradition and simple folkstyle that one hears rarely these days"
From Liner notes:
Though Beyle Schaechter is primarily known as a Yiddish poet and songwriter (see her other two CDs), she is also an accomplished traditional Yiddish folk singer who has shared her songs with a new generation of singers, interested in her authentic style. Her extensive repertoire was learned in her hometown of Chernovitz (then Romania, now Ukraine).
This recording contains material from two sources: Tracks 1- 12, and track 27 are from a studio recording with Alicia Svigals (violin) and Lorin Sklamberg (accordion) made in 1994. Tracks 13-26 are from a live concert at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, Texas, performed in November, 1993. Schaechter-Gottesman sang unaccompanied, but was joined by Nigel Jacobs (violin) and Mark Louden (accordion) at the end of the concert.
If you're interested in authentic Yiddish folksinging, then this CD is for
you.
