Is it pop? Is it punk? Whatever it is, which for the sake of marketing labels we'll just say it falls into the realm of "pop-punk," Drywater sure sounds good to me. Besides the pop-punk debate (which seems to badger many other bands in current existence), this NYC-based trio straddles many other lines with this foray into recorded vibration. Not the least of which is lead singer James Salerno's uncanny ability to sound like a damn choirboy one minute and then launch into something straight outta Soundgarden the next. It's really quite something to behold and lends an added element of mysterious unpredictability to the band's total sound.
Banking on Salerno's occasional exorcisms, Drywater has managed to capture the raw and spirited signs of punkdom, undoubtedly leading them down the path to sharing stages with The Damned and Bouncing Souls; but they have harnessed this live-wire act and packaged it up into something pretty damn snappy and spectacularly fun. And they couldn't be coming along with this album at a better time. It's a return to rock, and it takes the finest elements that catapulted Green Day and The Clash to mainstream ears, and puts a different spin on it. Undoubtedly, I can hear many of these songs making an impact on radio waves, and if they can capitalize on the current trend that has made snot-nosed bands like Sum 41 and Alient Ant Farm stars, then Drywater can certainly hang in for the long haul. This disc is a lot of fun, and best represents the ability to make hybrid rock that still maintains its energy and joy. Like the aforementioned Green Day, Drywater has that secret weapon that makes or breaks every band eventually - a great drummer in F. Carter Hoodless, a solid gut-sticking bass player in Gerry Bayer, and a charismatic frontman who can actually sing, and write a hook like nobody's business.
There are discs that I respect for their musicality and innovation, and then there are discs that I truly enjoy and have fun listening to. This disc from Drywater has managed to cross both lines, with ease and an unending amount of potential. I'll look forward to my next visit to NYC and the next disc from this band. It's like listening to the slightly more socially accepted cousin of Social Distortion, and hey, isn't that a family you'd love to belong to?
Standout tracks: "Rotter," "Funny Sound," "Not Me," and "Other Side"
