"SATIN AND SMOKE"

The lyric's unfold with warmth, passion, and a good understanding of what the composer meant in the breath of this consummate artist." F.E. Dennis freelance writer for The village voice N.Y.C.

"SATIN AND SMOKE"
History is made when unusual and exciting things
take place, as it was the day , Earla decided to take my advice and release her latest CD, a compilation of poignantly romantic tunes written by equally romantic minded composers, to thejazz world for every romantic jazz lover to hear.
Earla is not a "Johnny come lately" but is in point
of fact, a singer whose roots run very deep. In the
highly communicative art form of jazz, which include
but a handful of truly gifted singers, great timing
and intuitive vocalizing are vital links to the form
of phrasing that determines ingredient. Such vital
things as these do not happen overnight, nor can they
be found in textbooks or taught in music schools. Like
Charlie Parker always used to tell the young musicians
when theyâd ask him how he had learned to play the way
he did, âYou canât play it if you havenât lived it,â
and the same goes not only for musicians, but also for
the singers as well, Earla has lived what she sings.
And every one with an attentive ear, can feel the
pain, pathos and poignancy that emanates from her
heart and soul. Chet Baker, legendary jazz trumpet
icon, when asked by musicians, critics and fans, who
he felt was his personal favorite female singer, never
failed to mention that his favorite was Earla Porch.
And I couldnât agree more!

Earla has paid her dues and then some, refining
her voice in the great jazz clubs with some of the
greatest jazz players in history along New York City
âs storied 52nd Street and upper east side. It was at
the famed jazz club, âBirdlandâ that I first heard her
singing, and was immediately struck by the cool,
sultry tone and phrasing of her voice.

While living in Los Angeles, and working steadily
with Chet Baker, Occasionally,Earla would come into the clubs where
we worked, and Chet would always make a point of
having her sing a couple of tunes. It was the same in
the clubs Chet and I worked in New York City, Boston,
LA., Chicago, wherever.

Earla loves the melody and enhances the lyrics of
every tune she sings. A voice like hers is not
developed overnight. It requires a lifetime of dues
being paid and respect being earned the old fashioned
way, singing and honing her chops in the clubs of New
York City, like âThe Open Door,â âThe Onyx,â âThe
Three Duces" , âThe Famous Door" The Club Carosel"
"Birdland" etc.

Earla is a "listenerâsâ singer" who sings in the
same laid back understated manner that Chet Baker used
to sing in. Hearing her sing gives us a major clue as
to why Chet Baker liked her as much as he did. She
gives full attention to the melody and lyrics, and
uses the dynamic hues and shading of the entire
musical color spectrum.

drummer for Chet Baker

EARLA PORCH

"Satin & Smoke"

Quality cool from the old school is being taught
here, with sultry singer Earla Porch giving her
unique New York City nightclub treatment to this
collection of eight standards from the great
American songbook. No album has been more aptly
titled. The liner notes should include instructions
on how to make the perfect martini: shaken, not
stirred.

Porch has not only loved jazz her whole life but has
also turned her talents as a sculptor to giving
permanent life to bronze busts of several great
musicians. Creativity and improvisation are integral
parts of her personality.

Now living in Green Valley, this versatile artist
performs in concert formats, in recording studios
and in nightclubs, some locally and others in major
cities across the country as well as across the
world.

In the liner notes, jazz luminary Chet Baker says,
"Earla is my favorite female singer." Jazz
writer/critic, Pete Colby comments, "She loves the
melody and enhances the lyrics to any tune she
sings. A voice like hers isn't developed overnight,
it requires a lifetime." The noted film critic Rex
Reed adds, "Her natural gifts shine forth
brilliantly."

Porch gives equal amount of vae to sensitivity and
swing, as well as to shading and dynamics within the
melody and lyric of any tune she happens to be
singing. She is a listener's singer, using an
understated approach that will reward thoughtful
attention. she goes swinging through "My Romance,"
reflecting on how "I.NeverEntered My Mind," while
marveling that, "It Could Happen To You," with a
rolling tenor sax solo by New York City based
saxophonist, Ken Barry.

Let yesterday's rock starts founder on songs such as
these, unsure where to [md the deeper emotions such
composers as Rogers and Hart buried in their
phrases. Earla Porch knows where to find them. She
has loved them. The experience fills her voice as
her voice fills our hearts.

Grade: A

Earla Porch is a jazz singer known to afficianados for her exceptional clarity of tone and natural gift for interpreting the lyrics of musical standards. Described by the late, great Chet Baker as a beautiful singer, Earla captures an audience with her musicality and phenomenal strength of emotion. She is one of a very few vocalists that can make a standard sound new. She accomplishes this, not by over-the-top vocal dramatization, but by a solid understanding of the music and a sensitivity to what the lyricist is trying to express through the composition.

Pete Colby jazz writer for Boston Globe

"She expresses great emotional and narrative power through precise application of her finely tuned vocal skills" -- J.W. Wilson, The New York Times
