Swinging, funky, and rhythmic jazz, featuring Jan on piano, organ, flute, even wah-wah accordion and vocals; mostly originals by this tight trio plus friends.

JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo, JAZZ: Acid Jazz
Details:
The Jan Jungden Trio has just completed a CD of primarily original songs in the jazz and R & B vein. Jan Jungden, founder of the group and writer of most of the songs, plays the piano, organ, flute, and even accordion, as well as sings lead and harmony on most of the songs. Her piano and organ styles stretch from modern to classic jazz, as well as include a smattering of her earlier R & B influences. She has developed her own style of flute playing, taking classical flute training as well studying the rock influence of Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and using these sounds with her jazz and Latin flavors. Her original songs evoke the smooth sounds of Diana Krall, Sade, Astrid Gilberto, as well as the rockier edge of New Orleanâs Meters, and Steely Dan. Always searching for unusual sounds, Jan plays alto flute on Besame Mucho, and âwah wahâ accordion on Champagne Cadillac.
Fred Fagan and Justin Blackburn together on bass and drums have created an expertly mixed palette of sound to make these diverse tunes each have there own unique identities. Fred plays upright as well as electric bass, depending on whether the song calls for classic jazz, or requires a more percussive and funkier sound. Justin Blackburn aptly created a different groove for each song, and added many percussion tracks including congas, bongos, vibra-slap, and claves.
Special guests include Patty Tuite on vocals, a blues and jazz artist who heads her own band in Eastern CT, George Spurlock on electric bass and Bill Rood on saxophone. Mike Bloomer of âKing Cakeâ played electric and acoustic guitar as well as engineered and helped produce this CD in his studio, the Upstairs Room in Scotland, CT.
The first 4 songs on the CD reflect the trioâs jazz abilities, and are a good example of most of the jazz club work they are currently doing. The second half of the CD reflects their R & B and New Orleans influences, interspersed with some Latin tunes, even a song written by Jan in Spanish!
