'TOTARO's new CD 'Vice Presidential Pardons' Produced by David Lowery of Cracker (Camper Van Beethoven/Counting Crows/Sparklehorse) is a dramatic rock n' roll journey written by John Totaro and performed by his stellar band TOTARO. This concept CD was recorded in January and February 2007 at David Lowery's Sound of Music in Richmond, Virginia.
Critically acclaimed songwriter John Totaro discusses in a 12-song journey his living One Day At A Time (he calls it 'one beat at a time'). John Totaro writes about life. His life. His blurry alcohol daze from not too long ago and the first three years of sobriety. Recovery. Totaro recently joked from stage 'Now there's a stretch another rocker in recovery'!
Totaro's CD 'Vice Presidential Pardons' is a must own for original rock fans who are interested in hearing someone sing as John Totaro always has with urgency, tongue in cheek point of views, and his 'pants around his knees' honesty. The CD was perfectly recorded by engineer whiz John Morand. John Totaro has been a mainstay on the New England music scene since the 1990's and his band TOTARO has been heralded as one of Boston's best unsigned bands'.
John Totaro's vocals are pretty a la Jagger's on a very good day. Nino Tianeli, Hammond organist and pianist expert brings into Totaro's arrangements Tianeli's expertise a la a decade of Conservatory training reminiscent of Benmont Tench and Garth Hudson. Ninoâs playing has garnered her top international awards and her sultry harmonies lay on the honey perfectly sweetening John Totaroâs perfectly weathered vocal approach. Bassist Rhino and drummer Davey King once again on a Totaro release provide rock solid backing and John Totaro's more then able on the guitar. Guest guitarists Alan Weatherhead (Cracker/Sparklehorse), David Lowery (Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven), Matt Nichols (Mozeley Rose), and session ace John Leedes all take a hand filling out the guitar chores.
So who is John Totaro?
John Totaro has been writing, recording and performing his original songs since the 1980's. In the 1980's Totaro worked with John Curtis of the popular Pousette-Dart Band (Capital Records) in a student-teacher relationship. Together they recorded Totaro's first release 'Run to Mother' which was with Totaro's original line-up of The Accidents. 'Run to Mother' and follow up releases garnered airplay on commercial and college radio.
This band morphed into 'The Tats' named after Totaro's childhood neighborhood nickname. The Tats released radio singles most notably 'When I Met You' that topped many local play lists for airplay in 1992. On-air Albert O disc jockey of WBCN called 'When I Met You' a pop masterpiece. Also released in the early 1990's was Totaro's 'Furs, Diamonds & Cocaine' which again got lots of airplay and remains one of Totaro's most requested songs when he performs live. At this time The Tats played gigs with the cream of the crop of Boston bands 'O Positive'; 'Til Tuesday'; 'Del Fuegos'; 'Willie Alexander'; 'The Lines'; The Neighborhoods'. Totaro released his first album on CD and cassette in the early 1990's.
'Bang, Crash, Drive' released by John Totaro & The Accidents was a spin off of The Tats (name change due to another band in New York using the same name) and encouraged by his label this began the use of Totaro's name out front of all his projects. Totaro's CD included the Spinal Tap-ish 'Subterranean Homesick Too' of which he did a music video. This video had cameos by Boston music scene notables Charles Laquidera of WBCN, Musician Willie Alexander (Boom Boom Band/Velvet Underground/Persistence of Memory Orchestra), WAAF's Carmelita 'The Scene Queen' and countless other dj's and musicians. Music Television was in its infancy and this fast paced video received airplay on cable stations across the country. It was at this time that John Totaro was tapped by Continental Cablevision (Media One) to host and produce a weekly cable TV show 'Rawk Tawk with John Totaro'. Rawk Tawk aired throughout Massachusetts for 3 years with a total of 84 episodes. Each show consisted of taped live performances by Totaro's guests and an interview segment. Totaro's guests were the cream of the crop of the New England music scene. The Push Stars; Reeves Gabrels from David Bowie's band; Letters to Cleo; Swinging Steaks; WBCN & WFNX dj's; Charlie Farren to name a few.
Dropping most of the name of the act but keeping all of the musicians the abbreviated name became 'TOTARO' and this brought 2 CD releases in the mid 1990's 'Toe Tar Row' and 'Christmas Carols'. 'Toe Tar Row' featured guest appearances by Kelly Knapp of The Bristols/The Darlings and Willie Alexander. Once again Totaro's CD received commercial and college airplay across the country and pockets of Europe. Most notably was John Totaro's song 'Deep South Feeling' which created a regional following for TOTARO in markets in America's south.
TOTARO's 'Christmas Carols' was a CD release of original and traditional Christmas songs, which originally was sent out to TOTARO's fan club. 500 gift-wrapped copies of the CD were mailed to fans and supporters with a hand signed thank you note from the band. This fun CD has two John Totaro originals on it and a very fun version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeerâ sung in Japanese. Model and later 'Entertainment Tonight's' Maria Menounous was one of the 'Carols' featured on the CD's front cover. Later the CD was released to the public. TOTARO were now playing more than 100 shows a year in Boston, MA; NYC; Providence, RI; Hartford, CT; Portland, ME; Portsmouth, NH. If there was a club or stage featuring original rock John Totaro played there. Airplay and live on air interviews increased and TOTARO were everywhere. Totaro's music was in stores such as Tower Records, Strawberries, Newbury Comics, etc. And initial orders of 1000 CDâs were quickly reordered and then reordered to meet CD sales at gigs.
With the new millennium Totaro recorded a new batch of songs for his next CD. But this time around he decided not to release the CD without a bigger label commitment. The CD by âGroup Eâ called âDeceptions Reflectionsâ was never released although it sells well at live performances.
For TOTARO's follow-up to the shelved 'Group E' CD, John Totaro decided to work with recording artist/producer David Lowery of Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven. Since the early 90's John has been a fan of the work of David Lowery and by both fans and press TOTARO have been compared to Cracker many times.
TOTARO's 'Vice Presidential Pardons' a 12 song CD produced by David Lowery was recorded in January and February of 2007 in Richmond, Virginia.
Totaro have shared bills with Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, Jeffrey Gaines, Cracker, The Neighborhoods, Til Tuesday, Letters To Cleo, The Lyres, Swinging Steaks, Del Fuegos and hundreds of other bands.
"If you listened to the critics, you'd think TOTARO was on their way to the top. They've been called "Boston's most heralded unsigned band". They've been compared with bands like The Clash, Cracker, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, and David Bowie."
SOUNDCHECK MAGAZINE, Boston, MA
"John Totaro writes songs that span multiple genres and labels from melodic pop tunes with lyrical hooks, to pure punk songs complete with snotty in-your-face attitude coupled with a wink and a smile."
