Sea Trees is about transformation. It draws attention to the gift of one of natureâs most valuable resources: trees. It is also about wooden tall ships, which for centuries, have been one of our most relied upon modes of transportation. These majestic sea-going vessels, regaled in full sail, have graced the deepest of waters. And they have done so for as long as scores of deep-rooted trees have whispered their generations-old treasury of tales; tales as tall as they are themselves. Trees are truly the roots of sail, many of whom have proudly living out a whole new life within a forest on the sea.
Sea Trees is written for vocal group or choir in three vocal parts. The accompaniment is comprised of piano, cello, and flute, providing a hornpipe style foundation while the various vocal parts, both sung and spoken, move in counterpoint atop the surface. The harmonic structures and melodic lines are broadly yet discretely stated above the instrumental parts with a relentless bass line firmly delivered by the piano. The spoken parts are quite rhythmically animated while listing many of the various trees used in the array of parts and fixtures found in the craft of shipbuilding. Once the piece is well under way, the flute enters to find the storytellers bound to the accompaniment as sea trees march gloriously into a new life, transformed, and longing for home under a single sky.
