Details:
This Paper City is an Auckland, New Zealandâbased altârock band. We play original music that features powerful guitars and dynamic rhythms, supporting soulful vocals. Our influences are varied, but include Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Green Day and Pink Floyd, blended with elements of Matchbox 20 and Weezer. The bandâs first album Sink & Swim was released under Cliff Hedleyâs solo name, on his own independent record label, Sonic Orange. Three singles were released with videos, and had airplay on several radio and TV stations throughout New Zealand, including TVNZ, C4, Alt TV, Juice TV, The Rock, Kiwi FM, Times FM, and several regional stations. Sink & Swim was âIndie Album Of The Weekâ on Kiwi FM. Music from the album has also featured on TVNZâs news, and as soundtrack material for independent short films. Our gigs range from the full band experience to intimate acoustic events. Fans claim the live This Paper City sound is even better than the recordings, and gigs around Auckland and the North Island have been roofâraising events.
This Paper City has appeared on Auckland radio stations for interviews and live performances. Our first album "Sink & Swim" was awarded NZ On Air âNew Recording Artistâ and video production funding, and has had three singles featured on NZ On Air HitDiscs.
The decision to move to a band name reflected the change in focus from Cliff Hedley's solo work to a more band-driven collaborative style and sound. Including Hedley, four of the five members of This Paper City contributed to Sink & Swim (keyboardist AJ Hay, guitarist Andre Birt and drummer Brent Martin), with bassist Micaela Bonnar joining the band in late 2008.
Band Members
Cliff Hedley:
Cliff's musical life started with three years of piano, which he gave up at age 11 because all the other kids teased him for being a piano geek. After a year he discovered the guitar and didn't look back. Not long after that, he realised he could sing and set about figuring out how to do both at the same time, writing his first song at 15 and starting out in bands not long after. He now regrets bowing to peer pressure and occasionally dabbles on the keys again, aspiring to be like Chris Martin or AJ Hay. His biggest musical influences were from the Seattle scene â Pearl Jam and Nirvana, and he was known to
wear flannel shirts and ripped jeans back in the day. He also draws from a wider range of music from the old school of The Beatles and Beach Boys through to Sublime, Weezer, Coldplay and Foo Fighters. Cliffâs other interests include sports involving H2O, boards and gravity (surfing & snowboarding), along with American muscle cars (especially Mopar and Dodge Chargers), options trading (show me the money) and creative writing.
Andre Birt:
Andre has been playing guitar for more than twenty years now. If Andre's playing were to be likened to a vehicle, it would be a cruise liner â it's not always the fastest, but it gets there in style. It's not that he's intentionally copying Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, but rather that is the way he believes the instrument should be played. Andre also has an Engineering Science degree, is football mad, and plays poker in his (very little) spare time.
AJ Hay:
AJ ditched his classical training at age 17 to rock out. Musical influences include Ben Folds, Peter Gabriel, Phish and Mozart. He wishes heâd learned to play the guitar better, because carrying a piano around is tough work, and people just look cool carrying a guitar case. AJâs crazy and diverse life includes cricket umpiring and musical theatre, and he has performed naked on stage. There is scant photographic evidence of his shoulderâlength, rock ânâ roll hairstyle back in the 90s.
Micaela Bonnar:
When Micaelaâs dream of one day becoming an air hostess was shattered at the age of seven upon realising that she wouldnât quite measure up to the height requirements, she redirected her attention to music. Learning piano from a young age began her foray into music, the foundation on which she has become a multiâinstrumentalist. Micaela balances her life between teaching, studying, musical theatre, and shooting ranges. Micaela has very diverse musical tastes, ranging from Bonnie "Prince" Billy to Rachmaninov, Bjork to Kills of Leon. When not performing with This Paper City, Micaela plays bassoon in the Auckland Symphony Orchestra. Other than becoming a world famous rockstar, Micaelaâs other
lifeâlong ambition is to one day have a pet chimpanzee named "Mr. Duck".
Brent Martin:
Brentâs foray into the Fine Arts began at the tender age of 12 when a passion for ballet drove him to hitch hike from the East Coast of New Zealand to the centre of ballet on Earth: âThe Royal Ballet School of Herzegovinaâ, to study under the renowned âMadame Roach Tokkaâ. But life was to deal Brent a bitter blow, as a supply of tights & ballet slippers in âabundantâ sizes was short. The final straw came when the school was not prepared to meet the costs required to structurally reinforce their inâhouse theatre stage, and Brent was thus scratched from the cast of Swan Lake. However, the Arts were not finished with Brent, and while he was working his passage back to his homeland gutting fish in the bowels of a factory ship, he discovered a natural ability for rhythm. Hitting things had always put a smile on his face, so it seemed only natural to bring the two together ⦠so upon arrival back home he traded his gutting knife for a pair of âSimon Phillips 707 Promark Drum Sticksâ and the rest is history (including, truthfully, studying under Frank Gibson Jr and touring the UK and Europe in the 90s).
